Our City Guides is from the point of view of the people we interview. A restaurant cannot be listed in our guides unless it is recommended by one of the tastemakers we’ve featured. We don’t want you to see the restaurant world through our eyes, but rather through the eyes of your favorite tastemakers in every industry. Why us? Why not them?

Recommended by: Gail Simmons (Judge, Top Chef)

The American Nouveau/Asian-influenced spot is a gem from Anita Lo. Aesthetically it’s sleek and minimalist, complimented by the coziness of being tucked away in a small space in the West Village. Lo is always creating inventive and stimulating dishes – definitely worth a drop by for any dedicated foodie. Make a Reservation.

Artichoke Basille’s Pizza

Recommended by: Rachel Brosnahan (Actress)

When looking for heavy, hearty and messy pizza–in a circle, square or slice–Artichoke’s will fill anyone up. The menu is short and simple, but the flavors are outstanding and bring a slew of famous fans. Plus, as the name suggests, they’ve always got artichoke pizza.

Babbo celebrates the Italian lifestyle, brought to you by world-renowned restaurateurs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich. Here’s an insider’s tip: reservations are impossible to get but the restaurant posts [...]

Bantam reinvents the bagel, serving bite-sized bagel balls stuffed with any type of cream cheese imaginable, from pesto, to sweet walnut.  Boasting creations like the infamous Weekend Brunch (an everything bagel infused with lox, tomato and red onion cream cheese), Banta Bagels is causing a stir their fresh twist on the NYC staple.

Bar Pitti may be the best outdoor seating in New York. It’s a neighborhood favorite for yummy Italian on a sidewalk adjacent to Da Silvano – where everyone wants to see and be seen. The best thing is, at Bar Pitti they can be without paying the Da Silvano prices. It’s definitely a well-priced go-to [...]

Jonathan Waxman’s Barbuto is undeniably a favorite of ours. No doubt a neighborhood gem, Barbuto’s Italian-inspired cuisine happens in a sleek garage space, and in the spring and summer all the doors open and inside feels like outside. We deem the JW roast chicken the best in the city; an absolute must try. Make a [...]

Bespoke Kitchen

Recommended by: Tamron Hall (News Anchor)

The concept at Bespoke Kitchen is a unique one: The diner selects ingredients from a list of fresh market vegetables and ingredients, and the chefs create a bespoke dish based on his or her preferences. A standing menu of appetizers and various entrees accompanies the list – for those who prefer a more traditional experience [...]

Birch Coffee

Recommended by: Carla Gugino (Actress), Chris Stang (The Infatuation)

This Manhattan-based coffee chain operates with a farm-to-cup philosophy in mind, sourcing all of its brews locally in an eco-friendly manner. Blue Hill

Recommended by: Dominique Crenn (Chef/Owner, Atelier Crenn), Catherine McCord (Weelicious), Jim Nelson (Editor-in-Chief, GQ), Martha Hunt (Model)

This hidden spot in Greenwich Village – from Blue Hill Farm’s Dan Barber – sources from local farms and focuses on fresh ingredients and seasonality. The aesthetic is sleek, and buzz words and phrases like “grass fed,” “local” and “pasture-raised” abound. At a time when everyone’s doing “farm to table” this is a spot that’s [...]

Blue Ribbon Brasserie

Recommended by: Nate Berkus (Interior Designer), Lionel Ohayon (ICRAVE), Branden McRill (Co-Owner/General Manager, Pearl & Ash)

This original brasserie flagship from New York restaurant kings Eric and Bruce Bromberg is a favorite of ours. The cuisine doesn’t pigeonhole itself into one genre or theme, it’s just innovative food at nearly reasonable prices. Definitely a great date night spot, but expect to wait – they don’t take reservations for small parties.

Bluestone Lane

Recommended by: Natalia Dyer (Actress)

It is hard to resist the Balthazar toast, especially in the age of avocado toast, but this item lets customers choose avocado and more with toppings from vegemite to fresh ricotta. This adorable hidden gem on Grove Street can only be described as French tapas (if there is such a thing). With a range of French small plates, fromages, charcuterie, and tartinettes – here you feel more like you’re eating in a small French country home on the outskirts of Paris rather than at a restaurant. [...]

By Chloe

Recommended by: Becca Parrish (BeccaPR), Devon Windsor (Model)

This wildly popular vegan restaurant is worth the wait for a table – or easy to grab a bite to-go. Helmed by chef Chloe Coscarelli, the menu is proof that vegan food doesn’t need to be boring, tasteless, or too “healthy.” Some of our favorites include the Quinoa Taco Salad, The Guac Burger, and the [...]

Café Cluny is a definite favorite of ours here at The New Potato. Another masterpiece started by New York restaurateur Keith McNally, it’s an always-dependable neighborhood mainstay where the servers wear St. James boat necks and the front room is just as cozy as the back. They happen to serve one of our favorite burgers [...]

Possibly one of the chicest lunch spots you can go to, Café Gitane is all about the people-watching. Oh, and have we mentioned the food? We recommend it for brunch rather than dinner; you may have to wait awhile but the avocado toast will be worth it… “The avocado toast is life changing!” – Karlie Kloss [...]

This Italian restaurant in the West Village pays homage (very successfully we might add) to the Italian restaurants of mid-20th century New York. They’re well-known for their delicious Italian classics; fashion blogger Bryanboy highly recommends the Linguine Vongole. Make a Reservation.

Claudette, 24 5th Ave, Recommended by Stephanie March

Just north of Washington Square Park, Claudette is a cheerful Provençal eatery where French doors open to Fifth Avenue’s sprawling sidewalks. The charming decor creates an appetizing atmosphere on both cold winter days and warm summer nights. Make a reservation.

Recommended by: Kim Dickens (Actress)

This tiny little storefront on Bleeker Street offers some of the best artisinal made-from-scratch ice cream and sorbets in the city, with flavors such as hazelnut, sweet tiramisu, and yerba maté (a South American tea). What makes Cones stand out amongst the hundreds of other ice cream spots in the city is its Argentine-style ice cream, [...]
