We look forward to the U.S Open every year, and this year we were thrilled to catch up with one of the tennis’ biggest stars, Maria Sharapova. No stranger to challenges, Sharapova inspires us to be, as she says, “bold, brave and fearless.” Read on for her beauty and workout routines, most memorable moments in tennis, and of course, her ideal food day…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
I am all about clean eating and really good ingredients…but of course, I do like to indulge here and there, too. Recently I was on holiday in Italy, and every meal was the most amazing culinary experience. Fresh figs, handmade pastas, summer tomatoes, fried scampi…and all with the most gorgeous view of the sea. It doesn’t get more ideal that that!
What’s the most memorable moment you have from a US Open in your career?
Winning the US Open as a teenager against one of my toughest rivals, Justine Henin, was a very special occasion. I’ll always remember those two weeks as some of my best on-court memories.
What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?
I keep my routines simple. In the morning, I rinse my face, put on Barbara Sturms serum, moisturize, apply Supergoop Everyday 50SPF sunscreen, then I’m out the door headed to practice. At night, I enjoy taking Epsom salt baths and treating myself to a 111 Skin Rose mask.
What workouts do you love? What do you find overrated?
Does anyone REALLY love a workout? It’s not all rainbows and butterflies but the work must get done. I do find joy in constantly working to gain strength in my body and mind, and feel great after working hard. As far as workouts go, I like to mix it up – agility training, spinning and even love boxing a bit!
How do you always start your day?
With a coffee with lactose free milk and my work emails because it’s the only time during the day I can focus on my business before I start my training day.
That is usually followed by a healthy breakfast. I make a green juice and chia bowl.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? The worst?
The best advice I’ve received is to surround yourself with smart people and ask questions – don’t assume you know all of the answers and attempt to “just figure it out.” I learned this especially to be true in running my Sugarpova business – we have a talented team that has truly helped me embrace my role as a business woman and entrepreneur.
What advice would you have for future young female athletes?
That anything is possible with focus, and will. Not one journey is ever the same, so don’t follow someone else’s path. Create your own and believe in it.
What’s something you used to be insecure about, and how did you overcome it?
My height. Now I love being one of the tallest in a room and have embraced that feeling.
What would your last meal be? Who would it be with?
I wish it could be my grandmother’s home-cooked Russian dumplings with cherries.
What’s one thing no one knows about you?
That I have a huge sweet tooth and would eat dessert after every meal if I could.
If you could give a quote of the day to sum up your current mood and mode, what would it be?
Be bold, brave and fearless in all that you do.
