Anna Camp Doesn’t Take Rejection Personally

Photographed by Danielle Kosann

We’ve loved actress Anna Camp ever since the first Pitch Perfect came out: We are – after all – tried and true Bellas at heart. They are #GirlSquadGoals incarnate. With the third and final of the film series coming out tomorrow we could think of no better time to catch up with Camp on all things lifestyle. The actress let us in on movie must-haves, the perfect date-night in with her husband Skylar Astin (who she met on the set) and why she doesn’t take rejection personally…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

For dinner it would be sushi, like yellowtail carpaccio with truffle oil and a Shrimp Tempura Roll with brown rice and spicy mayo, and finish with a delicious chocolate caramel dessert!

(This is definitely my ideal food day…obviously could never eat like this everyday…just in my dreams!)

Could you take us through your morning and nightly beauty routines?

In the morning I wash my face with Kate Somerville Gentle Cleanser and use two drops of Mario Badescu Rose Hips Oil on my face.

I wash my hair with Christophe Robin color care shampoo and conditioner.

If I wear makeup, I use NARS concealer in honey, curl my lashes, use Maybelline Full ‘N Soft very black mascara, NAKED bronzer palette, and Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in American Sweetheart.

Nighttime, I wash again with Kate Somerville, exfoliate with ExfoliKate, then use Kate Somerville wrinkle warrior.

What 5 pieces are you coveting right now?

These black patent combat boots from Stuart Weitzman, a Forest green velvet blazer, a black leather mini skirt, over-the-knee black suede boots, and a white ribbed turtleneck sweater…cozy and chic at the same time!

What’s been the very best part of the Pitch Perfect journey?

Meeting my husband and gaining such wonderful girlfriends I will have for the rest of my life.

What’s one thing funny we don’t know about Anna, Brittany and Rebel?

Brittany loves sweet potatoes; Anna is extremely, extremely generous; Rebel had a Channing Tatum poster in her trailer that the girls made her for her birthday.

Do you and your husband like to cook together? What do you make?

Yes, when we have time we like to grill burgers outside and add fresh ingredients like avocado, or green apple and pepper jack cheese.

What’s your date go-to on a night off?

Stay in, order pizza, a bottle of red wine, and a good movie.

What’s the best advice in your career you’ve received? The worst?

The best is to be persistent and remain grounded. Never take rejection too personally and always follow your heart. The worst is to make decisions out of fear of losing a job, even if it’s not the right one. Never take a job that you’re not passionate about out of fear of not working…you’ll end up being full of regrets.

Is there something you were insecure about for a long time, that you managed to overcome? How did you overcome it?

I was very insecure about my smile growing up. I still have a huge smile, and for awhile kids would make fun of me. I have so many pictures of me smiling with my mouth closed, but in high school I won best smile as my senior superlative and learned to never let anyone stifle my happiness.

What advice would you give young women grappling with their own insecurities?

It’s not always easy, but if you can learn to embrace and love the things that make you different and not try to make yourself like everyone else, the happier you will be. We all have something that no one else does – and that’s what makes you uniquely cool and bad ass.

Are there any foods or drinks you avoid? Why?

I avoid chickpeas and cottage cheese. Chickpeas make my stomach hurt! And the texture of cottage cheese seems kind of yucky.

How do you always start your day? What’s your go-to breakfast?

Always a cup of hot water, usually with lemon, then an almond milk latte. Next I’ll have scrambled eggs with a small side of black beans and tomato or Greek yogurt with blueberries, Kashi cereal and honey.

What’s your favorite old movie? Is there a certain item or accessory you like in it? If so what is it?

My favorite old movie is Streetcar Named Desire starring Vivian Leigh and Marlon Brando. I absolutely love the beautiful feather robe Blanche wears in one of the final scenes. So romantic, feminine and delicate.

If you could think of a quote of the day to sum up your mood and mode, what would it be?

Everyday is a new opportunity to be open and learn. Let light in so you can let love out.
