Martha Hunt Loves Pepperoni Pizza

It’s not everyday we get to sit down with a Victoria’s Secret model. Okay, so we’ve met our fair share, but we were particularly excited to meet Martha Hunt. Besides being seriously stunning, Hunt is the kind of woman we could easily be friends with; she balances her morning smoothies with Blackseed Bagels and thinks running is overrated.

You know we can’t help but seek out skincare and workout advice from models, and Hunt delivered. We met up with Hunt at the Caviar Kaspia popup in NYC’s Spring Place, and she gave us the intel on how she’d spend an ideal food day, her go-to products, and her travel essentials. Moral of the story: models, they’re just like us.

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

My ideal food day would be lemon ricotta pancakes in the morning, sushi for lunch, a classic homemade bolognese for dinner, and a fruit cobbler with ice cream for dessert.

How do you practice beauty from the inside out?

I work out about three times a week, mostly strength conditioning with a trainer. When I travel, I try to get outside for a hike or a dip in the ocean. I don’t compromise extra sleep for a workout; sleep always wins. I love having a full night’s rest, it keeps me energized throughout the day. I also practice Transcendental Meditation, it helps me remain calm when life gets crazy.

Are there any foods or drinks you eliminate in life? If so, what are they?

I don’t discriminate against food! I’m not too experimental when it comes to various meat, though. I like seafood, chicken, some beef and pork, but not too much.

What are the best foods and drinks for skin and hair? The worst?

Avocado, all dark greens, salmon, coconut water, fruits and vegetables for hydration! I noticed my nails and hair were growing faster than normal before the VS show, so maybe that was due to me eating more protein and overall healthier foods.

What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?

Since my work requires me to constantly wear makeup, my routine is simple. In the morning, I use a cream cleanser, then apply Knutek oxygen serum, and then Luzern Force de la Vie moisturizer, which works well under makeup. At night I do the same thing – maybe alternate with a night cream like Charlotte Tilbury’s Multi Miracle Glow. When I have a few days off, I use Herve Herau products with active ingredients to deeper cleanse and repair my skin.

What’s your go-to breakfast? How do you always start your day?

My go-to breakfast depends if I’m at home or working. At home I like to make a smoothie with greek yogurt, coconut oil, flax, berries, banana, almond butter, and almond milk. It’s delicious and hydrating. At work I’ll have an omelet from catering, and if I’m traveling, I love a good egg and cheese bagel from Blackseed Bagel.

What products do you always carry in your bag?

Lucas PapawNemat Amber fragrance oilVictoria’s Secret body care moisturizer in SheaColbert MD facial sheet masks and Mario Badescu rose and aloe face spray.

What are your favorite makeup products?

Charlotte Tilbury lip cheat pencilsLaura Mercier brow pencil in blondeRevlon’s Love Is On red lipstick and Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer.

What is your favorite recipe to make at home for dinner?

I love to make Ina Garten’s engagement roast chicken with roasted veggies.

What are your ‘cheat day’ go-tos? In other words, what do you splurge on?

These are embarrassing. Even though I live in the city known for pizza, I order Dominos pepperoni pizza with extra sauce once in a while. I also love Chick-fil-a, and am elated that it is finally in NYC! I Postmates it! Baked Cheetos and Talenti salted caramel ice cream are other favorites…comfort food is very important to me.

Where do you love to travel? What won’t you travel without?

Tulum, Mexico is pretty magical. I love the food, beaches, and bohemian community. The Caribbean seems to have it all. I like visiting St. Barths and Turks and Caicos – luckily they are not too far from New York. I’m lucky my job takes me to so many places. I never complain about having to go to Paris! Right now, New Orleans is on my bucket list.

What do your 72 hours leading up to the Victorias Secret Fashion show look like in terms of what you eat and drink?

I just make sure I get protein in every meal and I try to eat cleaner than usual. I’ll have Greek yogurt or eggs for breakfast, sushi for lunch, and salmon/chicken/or meat with vegetables and healthy carbs for dinner. I eat more than usual, because the workouts burn so many calories. Most of my snacks involve peanut butter or almond butter. I’m bad about eating my biggest meal at night; I know that’s not the healthiest thing to do.

What’s your workout regimen like the month leading up to the show?

Last year I amped up the workouts leading up to the show. I probably worked out five times a week for three weeks. I don’t know if I will go that hard again!

What are some tricks of the trade in terms of getting lean and toned fast?

Regular yoga lengthens and tones, and it’s restorative at the same time. I’m doing more strength conditioning now at a gym called Dogpound. Right now I’m trying to build more muscle so I’m doing less reps, with more weight. Just fitting in a workout revs up the metabolism, so find one you enjoy. Make sure you fit in all your meals, and don’t treat food like the enemy. All types of food should be enjoyed in moderation.

What workouts do you find overrated?

Running. I never run because it’s high-impact on my back, knees, and ankles.

Which make you see the best results?

Squats! I also started seeing better results once I added weights into my training. All bodies are different; I don’t think there’s one answer suited for everyone.

What are your favorite cities for food?

New York, LA, Paris, Milan…I could go on…

What restaurants do you go to in each?

I am obsessed with the tasting menu at Blue Hill Stone Barns in upstate New York. There are many courses fresh off the farm, and you get to play with your food! LA has the best sushi. I love Sugarfish. I also like Mozza in LA. The best pulled pork BBQ is in my hometown of Wilson, NC at Parker’s BBQThe Crow’s Nest Inn in Montauk has my favorite spicy lobster pasta. I love Da Mauro in Milan for authentic Italian food. L’Entrecote in Paris has the best steak I’ve ever had.

Advice to girls looking to feel better about their bodies…

We all have insecurities. Don’t focus on them. Your self worth has nothing to do with your body. All female bodies are beautiful and unique. Your mind is more powerful than your body, so never stop working on that.

What’s the issue you feel most passionately about right now and why?

I think it’s important people know that I struggled with scoliosis throughout high school. My body was completely different and more twisted before my spinal fusion. I’m working on a project, tying to get awareness out there for all young people burdened by scoliosis, and to help boost their self esteem. More funding is needed for research to improve treatment, so I went to Capitol Hill to advocate for that. Already treatment has changed drastically since thirteen years ago when I was diagnosed. I would like to see treatment continue to evolve, so eventually we find a safe way to straighten spines!

In the same vein as the new black in fashion, what is the new potato right now?

The new potato is taking political action and standing up for issues that matter to you. Be informed, be proactive, and never back down. We all need to pay attention to mid-term elections, and what’s happening with the issues that matter.
