Madeline Brewer Doesn’t Believe In “Crazy”

If you’re anything like us, Potatoheads, you binge watched The Handmaid’s Tale the second it hit Hulu. Chic red cloaks, eerie parallels to today’s political climate, a fierce cast – what’s not to love? Add in the show’s Emmy sweep, and it’s a Potatohead’s verified dream come true. We caught up with actress Madeline Brewer (who you may recognize as Janine) in New York to chat about the show, her snacking habits, and getting into character. Read her full interview below; you know we’ll be re-watching with red wine and popcorn…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

I’d start with an Americano with cinnamon and homemade french toast with bread from Lodge Bread. Then I’d have a banana and some peanut butter for a snack. Lunch would be a “chicken cheesesteak” from Govindas in Philly. Snack number two (because I’m a hobbit and eat constantly) would be some sweet potato fries and for dinner, it would have to be heaps of pasta made by me for my family around a tiny table in a beach house at the Jersey Shore; the best food is eaten in the best company.

How do you practice beauty from the inside out?

I’m vegan so my insides are smiling constantly; I love a good long hike and pilates.

What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?

Depending on the day, I use Kiehl’s Earth Clay Cleanser or Tammy Fender Cleanser and Tammy Fender rose water. Occasionally, I use witch hazel and just straight up vitamin E.

How do you get into character?

I research, I make playlists, I paint pictures of the character. I try to bring things into my life that I feel they might have around.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? What won’t you travel without?

Home, to see family and friends, is always my favorite travel destination. I won’t travel without my beanie; I use it to cover my eyes and sleep.

We’re so excited to continue watching you on Handmaid’s Tale – what has been your favorite part of filming thus far?

Getting to know Janine and both learn about her and from her. Getting to know the absolutely incomparable cast and creatives is also a favorite; they’ve been unreal.

What have you learned from playing your character, Janine?

Do not ever chalk someone up to just being “crazy.” It’s cruel, and it diminishes their mind and their humanity. Learn about them.

Have you been surprised by the response the show has received? What do you think makes it such a relevant show right now?

Honestly, I knew while we were filming (the energy was palpable) that we were creating something very important. The parallels to our political climate are obvious and frightening.

Do you have any go-to workout routines? What are they?

Pilates is my go-to. I love long hikes that leave me covered in dirt and sweat and smiling.

How do you workout on the road?

I like yoga, and I love walking around and exploring a new city.

What advice would you give young women wanting to enter the acting industry?

There’s so much to say here but mainly: Stay true to yourself. Stay on your path, with your gut to guide you. Also, we all screw up from time to time. Learn from it.

Are there any issues you are particularly passionate about right now? Why?

Trump is destroying the EPA, which will end up leaving us left for dead if he doesn’t start a world war that kills us all before then.

Stay true to yourself. Stay on your path, with your gut to guide you.

What’s always in your fridge?

Peanut and almond butter(s) and avocado.

What are five fashion items you’re coveting right now?

Sparkly Vans by Opening Ceremony, quite literally ANYTHING Rodarte, my boyfriend’s t-shirts…I love that people are wearing their activism on their clothing (see Lingua Franca’s sweaters or Dior ‘s “We should all be feminists” shirts), and always love anything vintage or repurposed.

How do you start every day on a positive note? Do you have a go-to breakfast?

I love an Americano. I like to do Pilates after that. I call my mom, and I definitely get enough sleep.

In the same vein as what is the new black in fashion, what’s the new potato right now?

The new potato is CARING; caring about yourself is on trend, caring about the earth is so dope, and caring for one another is really, really cool.
