The 4 Best Essentials Oils For Sleep

From Sara Panton, Founder of Vitruvi

Over the past few years, the importance of sleep has become more and more mainstream. It used to be considered bragging if you only caught 3-4 hours of Zzz’s a night. Now, a statement like that would garner you nothing but pitiful, puzzled looks. So yes, we’re all on the same page about sleep: it’s a precious commodity that we could all use a little more of.

Even though we understand how vital sleep is to our well-being, it can still be tricky to establish healthy sleep habits. Our suggestion? Create a bedtime ritual using essential oils. Using the same oils every night will start to cue your brain that it’s time to drift off. So, here are a few of our favorites to help you get your beauty sleep, naturally.

1. Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood is a rare essential oil that’s steam-distilled in India and brings the experience of a cedar sauna to you — wherever you are. The grounding properties of woodsy aromas are great to use before bed because they inspire deep breathing and can create a cozy bedroom vibe before falling asleep.

  • Add 10 drops of Cedarwood and 8 drops of Lavender to a diffuser and place in your bedroom with the door closed an hour before going to sleep. When you walk into your room before bed, it will smell like a grounding and calming oasis.

2. Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense is one of our favorite essential oils for the evening. It’s a resinous base note that mixes really nicely with other oils from either the herbal or woodsy family. Frankincense in its pure raw form has been used for centuries in ceremonies and for meditation, which makes it a natural addition to your bedtime ritual.

  • Apply a drop of the oil behind each ear before falling asleep.

3. Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is iconically known to help with sleep. Our favourite is our organic French Lavender—it truly smells like France in a bottle. This calming and gentle scent is also safe to use topically and makes a great addition to a warm evening bath.

  • For a fresh foot hydrator before bed, mix 2 tbsp of coconut oil and 4 drops of Lavender oil, then massage into feet for a relaxing night time ritual.

4. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

With a very rich floral aroma, Ylang Ylang essential oil is made for people who love the scent of exotic flowers. While many wouldn’t traditionally think of using floral aromas before bed, we like including Ylang Ylang in our bedtime ritual because it helps promote happy dreams and adds a nice complexity to other more gentle aromas, like Lavender and Frankincense.

  • Combine 1-2 drops with coconut or jojoba oil and massage into the face before bed.
