Actress Melanie Liburd

We have a new girl crush on our hands and it comes in the form of Actress Melanie Liburd. Liburd is one of those actresses who manages to be both unbelievably chic and somehow accessible; like a best friend you want to send texts throughout the day and develop a secret language with. If you’ve been watching Netflix’s Gypsy, you know just how talented she is, but what you probably don’t know is how charming Liburd is in real life. We chatted with the star and got the inside scoop on her travel essentials, how she unwinds after a long day on set, and her favorite London haunts. That’s right – as if she couldn’t get any cooler, Liburd is British. You know we’re suckers for an accent…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

I’d have a lovely brunch of homemade soft poached eggs and sliced avocado on sweet potato toast. For dinner, I’d choose grilled Mahi Mahi with mango and lime salsa and crisp arugula salad with balsamic dressing.

How do you practice beauty from the inside out?

I try to do pilates four times a week and mix up the cardio with beach runs, maybe a hike, SoulCycle, a dance class or yoga, all depending on how I’m feeling that day. Good food and exercise keep me happy. I’m addicted to body brushing.

How do you always start your day? What’s your go-to breakfast?

Hot water with lemon or peppermint tea, espresso, coconut probiotic yogurt with mango slices and nuts sprinkled on top is my favorite breakfast at the moment.

What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?

This could take some time; I love products. I use oil cleansers and balms on my face; I like my face feeling dewy and plump. I’m using Kiehls Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil at the moment. I use it with a face cloth and always rinse with cold water. I also adore Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel; it takes some getting used to, but it has amazing results. After cleansing in the daytime, I use Skinceuticals C + AHA  Exfoliating and Antioxidant Treatment; it’s seriously a game changer! I follow with a light layer of Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream. At night, I use Korres Black Pine 3D Sculpting and Firming Sleeping Oil and Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Face Butter. If I’m going out to a party, I use Sisley Paris White Ginger Contouring Oil For Legs and for an extra glam shimmer, Red Carpet Body Glow, it’s gorgeous!

What is always in your handbag? What beauty products can’t you live without?

In my bag you’ll always find water, organic sanitizer spray, lavender face mist, and a moisturizing hand cream. Most days, I use Juice Beauty’s Flash Luminizer, Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonder Glow, Mizani’s 25 Miracle Milk, By Terry Glow-Expert Duo Stick and Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

We’re obsessed with Gypsy – what has been your favorite part of filming thus far?

My favorite part of filming Gypsy is being in NYC. It has delicious food, great theatre, museums and the energy of the city is infectious.

What have you learned from playing your character, Alexis?

That life decisions are not always black and white, to follow your dreams, and to not fall in love with your boss!

How do you get into character? How do you unwind after a day of filming?

My process is different with every character I play, but with Alexis, I used a lot of music to get in to character. Alexis is a writer and performance storyteller, so I would write stories about her life in character. I unwind after work by going for a long run or relaxing with a glass of wine, sometimes both.

Where do you love to travel? What won’t you travel without?

I live in Los Angeles, so I like to go back to the UK to see my family whenever I can. I’ve never been to Bali, Peru, India… there are so many places on my list! I always travel with a good book, sunscreen and sunnies.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? The worst?

Always follow your intuition. Work hard. Be kind. You’re crazy. It’s too late. You won’t make any money. Can you tell which is which? When I hear something negative, it often makes me more determined.

What are your favorite tv shows to binge watch?

Big Little Lies, The Handmaid’s Tale, The OA and (of course) Gypsy

What are five fashion items you’re coveting right now?

Printed kimonos, high waisted 90’s Levi 501s, stack heels, vintage boots, and oversized sunglasses.

Do you like to cook? What are your favorite things to make?

I make a mean salad – it has baked squash with pear, kale, avocado, pine nut, quinoa and pomegranate. I eat a lot of fish plus vegan and vegetarian dishes. I love it when friends come over and we all cook together and drink wine, it’s more fun!

What are your favorite places to eat and drink in London?

One of my favorite gastro pubs in London is The Anchor and Hope in Waterloo, the food is delicious, and it’s also great for pre-theatre drinks if you’re heading to The Young or Old Vic for a show. Also Hemsley & Hemsley Cafe in Selfridges does a fantastic high tea.

If you could host a dinner party with any five people living or dead who would you have over? And what would you serve?

Whitney Houston, Prince, Kevin Hart, Michelle Obama, and Nelson Mandela. We’d listen to so many incredible stories, feel inspired, laugh our heads off, sing, dance and listen to wonderful music. I’d serve vodka martinis, rum punches, and yummy finger food.

In the same vein as ‘what is the new black’ in fashion, what’s the new potato right now?

The New Potato right now is standing up for what’s right and not being afraid to do so.
