3 DIY Summer Face Masks

If Joanna Vargas’ masks are awesome enough for Julianne Moore and Karlie Kloss, they’re awesome enough for us. And the ones she gave us this week are made from the herb we’re recently obsessed with, turmeric! Turmeric is a wonder-herb; as we discovered last week, it has a multitude of benefits when ingested. The brightly-colored herb can help strengthen the immune system and support liver function – and did you know it can also be hugely beneficial to the skin when applied topically? That’s right! Turmeric can be used as an exfoliant and will help to smooth skin’s texture. It has also been known to aid with eczema and psoriasis, and can even reduce inflammation and acne. We know it might seem strange to apply a mustard-colored powder to your face, but when the benefits are this good, it’s definitely worth it. See below as our resident facialist Joanna Vargas provides three great face marks to make using turmeric.

“Make sure to only use organic pure turmeric powder. Some brands unfortunately dilute their turmeric powder, and use dyes to give it that orange vibrant color. This can result in your skin temporarily turning a bit orange. This is one DIY ingredient that must be organic!”

Exfoliating Anti-Inflammatory Mask  

1 tbsp of coconut oil

1/2 tsp of organic turmeric

1 tbsp of almond meal

This mask multitasks as a super gentle scrub on the skin with the almond meal. Mix all ingredients together. Scrub the mask in gently for about one minute. Then leave on for 10 minutes to let the hydrating anti-inflammatory properties of both coconut oil and turmeric sink in. Remove with a warm cloth.

Triple Action Turmeric Mask

1 tbsp of organic greek yogurt

1 tsp of honey

1/2 tsp turmeric

1 tsp aloe

I call this a triple action mask as it is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and super hydrating. Honey and aloe are natural antiseptics, great for keeping your skin clear. Turmeric is the anti-inflammatory, while organic greek yogurt will boost your skin with hydration and it’s antibacterial too! Mix all ingredients together, leave on for 10 minutes. Remove with a warm cloth.

Anti-Aging and Brightening Mask

1/2 a banana mashed

1/2 tsp turmeric

1/2 tsp matcha powder

1 tbsp olive oil

Both matcha and turmeric have these amazing anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties and then some. Olive oil boosts your skin’s elasticity and is another powerful antioxidant. Banana will leave your skin feeling firmer, with a radiant glow because of its high content of minerals and vitamins. Mix all ingredients together, leave on for 10 minutes. Remove with a warm cloth.
