How To Build A Holistic Pantry

From Dr. Daryl Gioffre

Headaches, digestive problems, sinus issues, sore throat, menstrual pain, athlete’s foot, dry skin, immune issues like the flu and the common cold – these are common symptoms that most people feel from time to time – chances are, you have had at least one of them, perhaps even more.

There is an old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Every day you should strive to be proactive about your health so that your body doesn’t elicit any of these symptoms. Any symptom that your body experiences is a sign that your body is out of balance.

This is why you want to focus daily on all of the small things that keep you healthy – 3 to 4 liters of alkaline water, breathing exercises, getting in at least 5 to 9 servings of vegetables, daily minerals, lymphatic drainage, detoxification, and stress reduction.  Come up with a game-plan to incorporate as many of these strategies into your daily life, and you will boost your immune function, and the symptoms I mentioned above will be few and far between.

With that said, when and if they (symptoms) do arrive, you need to be prepared. Being prepared for whatever you may be facing can mean all the difference in how quickly you heal and recover.

My secret weapon – a well-stocked health cabinet! Having an arsenal in your health tool box will help you crush any symptoms before they become too deeply ingrained, hopefully making you feel better quicker, and avoiding a visit to the doctor.

Cold-pressed coconut oil is at the top of the list because of its versatility. Every night, I put it on my skin to keep it hydrated, toned, and wrinkle free. My wife uses it, as does my 3-year-old son and newly arrived newborn daughter! It has powerful antioxidant effects that help with skin issues such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema.

It also doubles over as one of the healthiest MCT fats (medium chain triglycerides), that research has shown to improve cardiovascular and immune function, better digestion, as well as promoting healthy weight loss.  Every day I eat 1 tbsp. of coconut oil to increase the healthy fats in my daily diet, and a few times each week I will mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of black pepper with the oil. Turmeric reduces the inflammation in your body, and is also a powerful anti-fungal and microbial. The black pepper is important as it increases the potency of the turmeric by 2,000 percent.

If you are looking to lose some weight, you need to add more fat into your diet. But remember, there are fats that HEAL, and fats that KILL!  I am talking about the healthy alkaline fats such as avocados, raw nuts and seeds, nut milks, nut butters (excluding peanut butter), and omega 3 fish such as wild caught salmon, sardines, anchovies, herring, and trout…and of course, coconut oil. In fact, 80% of your plate should consist of a nice mixture of these healthy fats and dark green leafy vegetables, accompanied by moderate proteins (10-15%), and small amount of vegetable carbs (5-10%).

Epsom salts and baking soda are a regular staple. I use them to make what I call the Acid Crusher Bath, which is one of twenty-one of my favorite detox protocols you will find in my 7-Day Alkaline Cleanse.  This consists of 2 cups of Epsom salts, 1 cup of baking soda, and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. If ever you find yourself in toxic overload, acidosis, food or alcohol poisoning, this bath is very helpful as the alkaline salts will extract any toxins in your body transdermally, and it works fast.

I remember my first marathon, my ego got in the way at mile 22, and I had my mind set on a certain time to finish.  With that said, I pushed the last 4 miles way too hard, spiked up my heart rate, and shifted my body from aerobic metabolism (good) to anaerobic metabolism (bad, where the body ferments sugar for energy instead of using oxygen).  The byproduct of this was my body creating a massive amount of lactic acid, so much so that within 10 minutes of my marathon ending, my body went into convulsions from acidosis. Well, thank God I always travel with my Epsom salts.  I immediately drank a glass of Daily Minerals, and jumped into a hot Acid Crusher Bath. Within 5 minutes, the convulsions had stopped.

This detox bath is great before bed, as it is very calming and soothing to your nervous system, and you will get one of your best nights of sleep.  It is also great to support daily detoxification, and can help heal any skin condition.

Before sleep, I have a nice array of essential oils that I use in a diffuser in both our room, and our children’s room. Oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, lemon, and frankincense all serve different purposes. You can use them on your chest to breathe better, or on your sinuses for congestion. Some peppermint on your temples works great for headaches, and 1 drop of frankincense and myrrh on the roof of your mouth can boost immune function and even help against certain types of cancers. Rub them on your feet to reach different acupressure points. They are very powerful and I use them on a daily basis.

Oil of oreganoThis wonder stuff is antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial. I use it anytime I feel like I’m coming down with something, I take 20 drops in 6-8 ounces of water. It’s a very strong oil, so it must be diluted with water.  I always travel with it, and place one drop under my nose on plane trips to instantly kill any viral or bacterial critters trying to invade my body.  In addition to the oregano, 10 sprays of bioactive colloidal silver hydrosol in my mouth before a flight always works well as a precautionary immune booster. It is anti-viral and anti-bacterial and is perhaps one of my favorite supplements to always have on hand.

I keep it in spray form for the mouth when I feel a scratchy throat or a cold/flu coming on. Remember, the cold and flu are viral and antibiotics are worthless, not to mention one round will destroy your microbiome (all the healthy bacteria in your gut) for up to 2 years, so avoid unless absolutely necessary. I have a nasal spray of colloidal silver for any sinus or nasal condition, and a gel silver for ANY skin condition (bites, stings, cuts, itch, psoriasis, acne, dermatitis, eczema, etc).

In regards to colloidal silver, there is only one that I trust – bioactive silver hydrosol by a company called Sovereign Silver. When I am having an immune challenge, I will use 1 teaspoon 3x/day. If there are any gastro-intestinal challenges, here is a great tip I learned from my good friend, and world renowned silver and health expert, Dr. Robert Scott Bell – take 1-2 tablespoons of bioactive silver with organic aloe vera, 3x/day (run everything by your specific health care provider first). This will bypass the acid in the stomach, and will help heal inflammation, acidity, and leaky gut in your digestive tract. Anyone dealing with Chrohn’s, IBS, Celiac, or any other inflammatory bowel disorder may want to consider this.

Elderberry Syrup is another powerful anti-viral and anti-bacterial.  I remember as a kid our parents giving us those nasty tasting cough syrups; I despised getting sick just because I knew I would be given those syrups that tasted like I was drinking oil. On the other hand, with Elderberry, your kids will enjoy the taste, and it is quite effective, especially for the flu. Research articles show that Elderberry is 3x more powerful than leading medications at beating the flu. One caveat: be careful not to buy one that has any artificial ingredients, or sugars such as fructose.

Mānuka honey is a monofloral honey produced in Australia and New Zealand from the nectar of the mānuka tree, and is the only honey I will ever use. All honeys are high in fructose (52%) which is very acidic for your body, as they spike insulin levels and immediately turn into fat. With that said, Manuka honey is different. It is a much darker and richer color and taste, and doesn’t seem to spike your insulin levels like other honeys do.  In addition, they serve as a very powerful anti-bacterial. If you have any fungal infections, I would use the Manuka on the infection, wrapped in gauze.  In addition to being anti-bacterial, it is also an anti-fungal. Take 1 tsp for a scratchy or itchy throat, including coughs.

In addition to using in your fridge to reduce moisture, sodium bicarbonate, otherwise known as baking soda, is one of the most powerful antacids you will find. It has a pH of 8.4, and works great to reduce acid reflux and heal an upset tummy. With that said, I never like to take one mineral salt by itself, as it can deplete the other minerals in your body.  This is why I created Alkamind Daily Minerals, which not only uses sodium bicarbonate, but magnesium, calcium, and potassium bicarbonate.

This is one of the most powerful combinations to get rid of reflux, a symptom that affects 50% of Americans. It also has worked for some of the most hardcore insomniacs, as the minerals before sleep help you get a deeper REM. In addition, your body is MOST acidic in the middle of the night, peaking at 5am, so taking a scoop of Daily Minerals before sleep will help your body neutralize daily acids, and will prevent your body from having to work so hard to regulate its own pH which is always tightly controlled at 7.4 on the pH scale.

Lastly, this one is a MUST have – activated charcoal. This is one supplement you want to have in your health cabinet, your office, and most importantly, your travel bag. In the case of food poisoning or alcohol poisoning or hangovers, this can literally save your life. I was on a trip to Turks and Caicos, and got food poisoning. It was awful – so bad, I could barely even drink water. I was able to get enough water down to swallow 2 capsules of charcoal, and within a couple of hours, the vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle cramps had stopped. Some supplements sell charcoal in a powder form. It is just as good in regards to function, but again, if you find yourself in a state where you need to take it, most cases you won’t be able to drink the amount of water you need to get all that powder down, and for that, I choose capsules instead.

So there you have it: all of the tools that are in my health cabinet, which is really your health arsenal. Some of these work great for preventative measures and daily wellness, and others for when you find yourself on the verge of getting sick. Regardless, I suggest you purchase every single one of them, so that you have them handy in case you ever find yourself in need. They work far better than medications, without the needless toxicity and non-desired effects.
