As you know, us potatoheads are more than a wee bit obsessed with face masks. We’ve professed our undying love to all different kinds, but we’re especially big proponents of clay masks. Clay works wonders for our skin. This superhero ingredient exfoliates and softens skin, draws out toxins and impurities, minimizes pores, banishes oil, and combats stubborn acne. Kaolin and Bentonite are the two types we see most often, and they both boast a laundry list of benefits to our skin. Our favorite facialist Joanna Vargas gives us the lowdown; read below for her head to toe guide to using clay in your skincare routine!
From Joanna Vargas
Clay in general is great for circulation, and a great way to absorb excess oil in the skin. Some clays, like bentonite, also have a slight electrical charge so they can pull toxins out of the skin. This includes bacteria and fungi. It’s also very relieving for people suffering from psoriasis and eczema. Fuller’s Earth Clay is great for evening out pigmentation. Kaolin Clay has all the above properties but also is great for a mild exfoliant, even for sensitive skin. Clay is loaded with minerals that are great for the lymphatic system as well.
Using Bentonite Clay in a face mask is a great way to detox your pores, but its detoxing properties don’t have to stop at your face. This also goes for treating skin ailments involving bacteria and fungus, and impurities like psoriasis or eczema. Spot treat and leave it on as a mask for these problem areas on your body.
Clay is a great way of pulling impurities from the pores. A clay mask is perfect for t-zone because everyone has larger pores in that area that tend to get clogged easily.
Charcoal & Clay Detox Mask:
1 tbsp. honey
1 tbsp. yogurt
½ teaspoon of bentonite clay
1 tsp. activated charcoal
Apply the mask evenly, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 10 minutes and remove with a warm damp cloth.
Clay masks are an ancient beauty secret and for good reason. Bentonite clay helps to remove impurities by drawing excess sebum form the skin. When mixed with water it also can draw toxins out of your face, just like this masks other ingredient, activated charcoal. It acts as a magnet to draw dirt out of pores. To balance out this masks clarifying properties, I added yogurt and honey, two powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial ingredients that also boost your skin with hydration.
