Your skin is your largest organ, and it provides great messages about what is happening inside your body. In fact, imbalances in your digestion, hormones, blood sugar, immune system, and other body systems might be showing up on your skin. If you address skin symptoms superficially by suppressing them, then you’ll miss out on an opportunity to heal your body on a deeper level.
What is your skin trying to tell you? Are you paying attention or ignoring and just covering it up? Can we agree it’s time for something different?
My two-week program is different from any topical treatment or cover up – it gets to the root cause. Fourteen days isn’t a random number that comes from nowhere! I chose 2 weeks because we can all set aside 14 days for better skin; it’s the perfect amount of time to press the reset button for your health for life! Essentially, you need to focus on the 4 C’s:
Clean Plate – I encourage you to eat a nourishing, cleansing diet while avoiding foods that inflame and irritate – such as sugar and dairy – and replace with foods that nourish and rejuvenate such as avocados, broccoli, and wild salmon.
Eating will become intuitive and you’ll reach for these foods because you love how they make you look and feel. Foods you eat make an impact on the inside out and helps address those root causes. After 2 weeks of eating this way, you’ll have glowing skin, and you’ll notice other signs of inflammation are reduced such as achy joints and pain. Moreover, your digestion will improve with the attention to supporting microbiome balance and eating more fiber.
Clean Body – A clean body comes from reducing triggers in your surroundings that can inflame, irritate, and age skin, as well as enhancing your body’s detoxification pathways to clean and clear skin from the inside out. You can’t avoid all environmental toxins, but you do have impact over certain things in your home. For example, you can reduce toxins in the air in your home by replacing your central air filters monthly. Choosing organic produce can reduce your exposure to pesticides and drinking filtered water can help you avoid chlorine and heavy metal contaminants.
EDC’s (endocrine disrupting chemicals) are in many places in our environment – in our air, water, food and personal care products – and are a class of chemicals that, in studies, are associated with conditions such as thyroid problems, infertility, early puberty, obesity, diabetes, and certain types of cancer (such as prostate and breast). We know our hormones change as we age and this contributes to accelerated fine lines and wrinkles in our 30’s, 40’s and beyond. So, why would we want to throw our hormones out of balance even further with exposure to EDCs?
Clean Mind – The mind and the skin are closely connected. Have you ever had a skin issue that stressed you out? A number of skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and even premature aging, can both cause AND be triggered by stress! Daily stress management helps. It can take as little as 30 seconds for stretching, a 10-minute walk, or a lengthier evening bath. This is time for you – it’s important to take the time. It only takes a few minutes out of your day to achieve a clean mind.
Clean Slate – This is the icing on the cake…using products free from toxic inflammatory agents and, instead, packed with key nourishing ingredients. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health reported 900 toxic chemicals are used in skincare and cosmetic products. I think that number is even bigger! There are a number of toxins in skin-care products. On average, we use 9 products daily and that exposes us to an average of 126 unique ingredients.
Here are 3 toxic chemicals found in skin care products:
Fragrance – We like to smell good and manufacturers know that, but the problem is that most skin care products contain synthetic fragrance, which is where many harmful ingredients are hidden. Fragrance contains a number of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). One of the chemicals of particular concern is diethyl phthalate (DEP). It is used to make smells last longer, but they’re known EDCs.
Parabens – These are known xenoestrogens, which means they have estrogenic activity in the body. Parabens have been found in breast tumors, yet many skincare companies deny this means anything for your health.
Formaldehyde releasers – Look on the label for quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, Bronopol, or imidazolidinyl urea. These ingredients are called formaldehyde releasers because they release formaldehyde into the surrounding air and liquids. In other words, when you rub skin care products containing these chemicals onto your skin, they can go into the air which you breathe or perhaps through your skin. Formaldehyde is known to cause DNA damage and cancer. It is most dangerous when inhaled and, in liquid form, can be absorbed through the skin.
Look for these easy alternatives instead:
- Essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance
- Rosemary extract instead of preservatives like parabens and formaldehyde releasers
- Some of my other favorite topical ingredients include: arnica flower extract, aloe leaf, ginseng root extract, CoQ10, and Turmeric.
After two weeks, you can pick up your mirror, and I bet you’ll notice your skin is smooth and glowing. You’ll feel better on the inside too, while changing your genetic expression to reduce your risk for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and chronic pain.
