Scroll through above for the best foods to eat before and after a workout!
From Erika Bloom, Pilates Expert and Founder of Erika Bloom Pilates.
When we focus on food as nourishment for our bodies and fuel for our lives, we tend to eat better. Food can also give us energy before a workout and refuel us after. This allows us to get the most out of each and every exercise and keeps us energized for the day to come. Choose your foods by finding a balance between protein, fat, and complex carbohydrates. This will give your body the building blocks to work hard and increase your fitness level. Avoid simple carbs, sugars, and excessive stimulants such as coffee. Consuming these will leave you exhausted and craving food post workout which leads to over eating that derails your exercise plan. I recommend my clients eat a very small, balanced portion before they workout (for energy) as well as another small portion afterwards (to re-fuel).
Depending on how you’ve scheduled your day, your pre or post workout food could be one of your three meals a day or it could be an additional snack. Pre workout, give yourself about one hour to digest and achieve the blood sugar rise of a balanced meal. Post workout you should aim to eat right away. Scroll through above for some choices I have found really work for myself and my clients as either a pre or post workout snack or meal!
