7 Benefits Of The Alkaline Diet

If you’ve ever struggled with acne, rosacea or skin redness, hair loss, or even just the effects of aging on skin and hair, you know that the conventional treatments out there don’t always work.

You can slather on all of the chemical treatments you want, but stubborn skin and hair problems just won’t go away on their own. Why? Because you never got down to the root cause, the toxicities and deficiencies that were causing all of these issues in the first place!

Fortunately, there is a better way, and that’s to treat your skin, nails, and hair from the inside out. All of those health and beauty issues have one common denominator…ACID!

What I love about eating the alkaline way is that the same foods that are perfect for nourishing your body on the inside also make your body look great on the outside. I want you to know, the health benefits of living an alkaline lifestyle go far beyond skin, hair, and nails.

So let’s walk through some of my favorite strategies to help you alkalize and energize your body so you can have the naturally glossy, beautiful hair and glowing, blemish free skin you want, as well as slowing down the effects of premature aging in your body.

It will make your skin glow.

Whether you’re dealing with acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, or wrinkled skin, there is one common denominator – ALL skin problems are ACID problems!  Your skin is the ‘3rd kidney’ and is the largest organ of the body, and is an important organ for your body to detoxify itself.

You have four major detoxification pathways – urination, defecation, respiration, and perspiration.  Any time you see ANYTHING show up on your skin, again, it’s a sign that you are acidic and your body is fighting like heck to get these acids out. When you see the signs and symptoms show themselves on your skin, it’s time to alkalize.

No matter what the manifestation is on your skin, chances are it begins and ends with what you eat, and sugar and grains are the biggest culprits.  I suggest cutting back or fully eliminating them from your diet.

I also recommend using a rebounder daily for ten minutes. The rebounder, or mini trampoline, will lymphatically drain and pull out the toxins from your tissues and into the blood like a vacuum. From there, with enough water, your body will eliminate the toxins out of the body instead of going through the skin.

You’ll have all-day energy. 

Your energy is a great marker of how healthy you truly are. Whenever you are feeling tired, one of the first things you should always be thinking of is water! My motto is ‘solution by dilution’ and that goes for all things in regards to your health, but especially energy. Just a 5% drop in your hydration levels can lower your energy up to 30%.

Since the average person loses 2.5L of water daily, it is my recommendation that you aim to drink 3-4L of filtered water daily, ideally with a pH of 8-9.5. To make your water more alkaline forming, add an organic lemon or lime slice, a dash of Celtic Grey Sea Salt, or supercharge your water with a scoop of Alkamind Daily Greens.

You will eliminate acid reflux.

1 in 2 Americans suffer from acid reflux! Most of us think that reflux is caused by TOO MUCH acid in your stomach. It’s easy to assume that’s the case because acid creeps up the esophagus. You can literally feel it.

On the contrary, reflux is actually caused by TOO LITTLE acid in the stomach. While you want to eat foods that decrease the acid in your body, we do want to increase acid production in the stomach (2 different kinds of acid we’re talking about here, body acid which is bad, and stomach acid which is good). To do that, you want to eliminate foods like caffeine, processed foods, sugar and grains, and increase stomach acid production by talking 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar daily, as well as drinking alkaline water rich in mineral salts like Alkamind Daily Minerals. 

You will sleep more restfully and wake up refreshed.

Waking up consistently between 1:00 and 3:00 am is a tell-tale sign you are acidic and your liver and your kidneys, your major detoxification organs, may be asking for some help.

Your body is always most acidic in the middle of the night, and if you’re not alkalizing your body on a daily basis, acid will keep you up and prevent you from getting a healthy, deep REM sleep. Focus on dark green leafy vegetables during the day like spinach, kale, watercress, and Swiss chard, as well as wheatgrass to assist your body in gently detoxifying the liver. Make sure to eat at least 3 hours before going to sleep, and avoid acidic foods high in carbs and sugar. Lastly, minerals like calcium, potassium, sodium bicarbonate, and magnesium are very calming to your nerve system, and the most powerful neutralizer of acid. Have these 30 minutes before sleep and it will be a game-changer!

You will stay on track for weight loss.

Being overweight is an acid problem. In addition to living an 80/20 alkaline lifestyle, here are two of my best tips for keeping the weight off.  First and foremost, you want to add more healthy alkaline fats into your diet. Now, I know what you’re thinking – if I am trying to lose the fat, why do I want to be putting fat into my body? The answer is simple – when you eat fat, you will burn fat!  So ideally 50-70% of your daily diet should consist of fats like avocados, coconut oil, raw nuts and seeds like almonds, hemp, and chia, raw nut butters (except peanut butter) like almond, coconut, and cacao, and even healthy Omega 3 fish like wild caught Salmon. 

Next, try something called intermittent fasting. With this, you want to eat 3 alkaline meals a day, and avoid the grazing in between.  And you want to eat these 3 meals in an 8 hour time-span (for example, 9-5). On the off hours, you will stay well hydrated with lemon water, herbal teas, and green juices. In doing so, you decrease your insulin levels, and your body moves from burning sugar as its primary fuel to source to burning fat.

You will prevent osteoporosis.

The pH of your blood is so important that it will let your body fall apart before it allows its pH to veer off course. That is why Osteoporosis is an acid problem! When your body becomes acidic from dietary, metabolic, and environmental toxins, it needs minerals to neutralize all that acid. If you’re not getting enough minerals from the foods you’re eating, your body will find a way to get them. It goes to its largest mineral bank, the bones, and will pull out the calcium to help maintain a tightly controlled blood pH of 7.4. This is why it is so important to eat alkaline foods that are rich in minerals, so that you give your body the calcium and other minerals it needs so it doesn’t have to do all the regulating on its own.

You will have healthy teeth and gums.

Just like your body steals calcium from the bones to neutralize acid, it will also steal minerals from your mouth. But your mouth only has a small amount of minerals, so any mineral deficiencies can quickly contribute to tooth and gum decay. It’s important to cut down on the acid-forming foods like sugar, grains (are you seeing the common theme here?), and processed foods that create acid that will corrode the mouth. 

Lastly, if you are dealing with any gum or tooth issue, try coconut oil pulling. Take 1 to 2 tsp. of cold-pressed coconut oil, and squish around you mouth for 15-20 minutes. The oil will literally ‘pull’ out any toxins and bacteria in your mouth, improving the health of your mouth. If you do try this, be sure to spit the oil out in the garbage (not down the drain as it can turn solid and clog your pipes).
