It’s woman crush Wednesday here at the New Potato, and we could not be crushing any harder on this week’s unbelievably stunning #LadyBoss, Tai Beauchamp. You may recognize Beauchamp from one of her shows, Window Warriors or TLC’s Dare to Ware. What you might not know is that Beauchamp is a true industry insider; she’s worked with everyone from Oprah to Seventeen and has been running her own media company since 2006. Read below for Beauchamp’s ideal night in, her epic skincare and beauty routines, and advice for shy public speakers…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
This is so tricky because the ideal food day is so completely decadent, but at the same time, I want to eat healthier in 2017.
Breakfast: Egg white and crab meat omelette, sautéed veggies on the side, grilled tomato, two cups of coffee and a mimosa made with Moet or Veuve Cliquot. I make my own breakfast most mornings. I always keep fresh crabmeat or smoked salmon in the fridge. I don’t eat much meat, but if I’m at a breakfast meeting, I’m also likely to order a side of bacon. I love bacon.
Snack: “Green Eye Candy” green drink from Magic Mix Juicery. It’s rich in greens but has a small sweet kick that helps refuel me.
Lunch: Spicy Tuna Roll, Toro Tartare and miso soup from Nobu. I could eat sushi every day!
Cocktail: I usually have a cocktail meeting, so I’ll have a Belvedere Gimlet on the rocks made with agave instead of simple syrup.
Dinner: A whole grilled Branzino with broccoli rabe or asparagus and a glass of a nice red wine. I know most people prefer a crisp white with fish, but I will always prefer a nice red.
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
I’m really into meditation and spending time reflecting and journaling. Even when I don’t have time to write a lot, writing one thing I’m thankful for a day is a way to help me stay focused on what is positive in life. And I work out at least three to five times a week. It helps me stay fit, which is challenging with my schedule but also helps me stay mentally focused. I also believe in paying compliments to other people. When you affirm others, it’s a way to pass positivity forward.
What’s your morning and nightly skincare and beauty routines?
I am a skincare junkie. I think my years of being a beauty editor have really shaped my skincare philosophy. I’ll try almost anything once.
My AM routine is more simple: In the winter, I cleanse with Luzern Pure Cleansing Cream. My aesthetician Mamie McDonald recommended it to me. I hydrate with Kiehl’s Reenergizing Face Cream (it’s in the purple jar) or the Kiehl’s Daily Moisturizer with SPF. I apply my Kiehl’s avocado eye cream. I’ve worn eye cream daily since I was twenty-five, and I’m a big believer in starting an eye cream routine early in life.
My nighttime skincare routine is so layered because I often have a full face of makeup for work. I absolutely never, never go to bed without washing my face thoroughly. First, I use Philosophy Purity cleansing cloths to remove makeup topically. Then I do a second round of cleansing with Philosophy Face Oil cleanser using cotton rounds. And then three times a week I add an exfoliant. I often add Dermalogica Micro beads to the Luderm cleanser that I use during the day. Then I put on a couple of drops of SkinByMamie oxygen 2O serum. Lastly, I hydrate with Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery.
I also exfoliate my lips at least once a week using Fresh Sugar Lip Polish or one that I make on my own with sugar, honey, olive oil and a touch of lemon.
What’s your go-to breakfast? How do you always start your day?
After morning prayer and meditation, I always start my day with a cup of fresh brewed coffee and a glass of lemon water. Then I work out. After working out I either prepare egg whites or an omelet. Coffee is the essential.
What is your TV makeup routine?
For TV, it’s really important to have a great base. Every couple of days when shooting I apply a face mask. I love the SKII facial mask.
When on set my makeup artist (Joanna Simkin of Lynda Esparza in New York and Shannon Pezzetta when on set in LA for Window Warriors) usually will apply an eye mask before further hydrating my skin. I usually let them do whatever they like for makeup, but I prefer softer eyes and a bold lip or a subtle smoky eye and nude-like colored lip.
Did you have a New Year’s resolution? If so, what was it and do you think you’ll stick to it?
I’m not a big believer in New Year’s resolutions. Most people I know leave them behind after two weeks. But, there are a few changes and themes I want to apply to my life this year. First, try to be more present daily. Second, work smarter not harder.
Who do you swear you were in a past life and why?
In my past life, I was either an artist or writer. I often imagine what it would have been like to live in Harlem and Paris in the 1920s and 30s. Between Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston (who shares my birthday) during the Harlem Renaissance and Hemingway and Dali in Europe, I think it would have been an amazing time to be alive. While it was a time of great struggle for African Americans in the US, and most people in the US after the Great Depression, it was also a time of spirited resistance and progression.
What’s your go-to lunch on set? Your go-to snacks?
I am obsessed with Welch’s Fruit Snacks. I’ll have a small bag and try to make up the less healthy eating by having a kale salad. I like salad, but I must say I prefer the Fruit Snacks. And I like Pita Chips too.
What was the best advice your parents gave you growing up?
My mother and grandmother always told me to keep going and stay faithful. I realize now that if you don’t have faith or hope, it’s easy to give up. You have to believe that you can and that you WILL, that is motivation daily.
What’s an item every woman should own?
A red lipstick.
If you had to choose one food to eat for the rest of your life what would it be?
Advice to those thinking about a career change?
Change is inevitable, and it’s also an opportunity to progress and advance. I say leverage your current role to help you transition to the next. Think about things that you might be able to do in your current position to make you more marketable for your next.
What social issues do you feel particularly passionate about and why?
The empowerment and education of women and girls, hands down. When I think about the inequality that exists in the workplace, in society, in cultures and at home that plague women and girls globally, it makes me realize that while we have come a long way socially, there is still so much to do. I was also raised by women – my mother and grandmothers (and also my paternal grandfather) – and I know how powerful women are and how they alone can truly shift and impact society and community.
What’s your best advice for shy public speakers?
Practice. After you really hone in on your message that is rooted in both fact and emotion, practice in front of the mirror, practice in front of friends and practice at work. I believe that we all have voices and stories that deserve to be heard.
How do you unwind after a long day on set?
Dinner with friends and a glass of wine, and then hopefully a great rest.
If you could host a dinner party with any five people living or dead, who would be there? What would you cook?
I’d make it a full-on girl’s evening-in…
Michelle Obama; I really think that Michelle Obama and I would be friends in real life. I love her authenticity.
Oprah; I know that this is probably a popular one, but having worked with Oprah and now recognizing how impactful it was for me to begin my career working with her, I’d like to share my gratitude.
Sarah Jones; she’s so funny, and so smart.
My grandmother; she’s been ill for the last ten years, and I miss having dinner with her.
Luvvie Ajayi of Awesomely Luvvie; she’s so smart and witty, and she doesn’t bite her tongue. She speaks her mind even though it makes some uncomfortable.
I’d make grilled salmon, corn pudding, stuffed leg of lamb (for the meat eaters), quinoa and kale salad, and grilled asparagus. I’d have my friend and chef Vanessa Cantave help as my sous chef. She caters a lot of my events and knows what I like and would make sure it’s seasoned to perfection. I’d ask each of them to bring their favorite dessert.
