Birgitte Hjort Sorensen told us that being culturally aware is the new potato, and we couldn’t agree more. That’s why we were so excited to sit down with artist Beau Dunn. We’re seriously in awe of her art, and we’re not the only ones – her work will be featured at Art Basel and in the prestigious Phillips Auction. On top of being enormously talented, Dunn is stunning. Just look at those photos! Dunn dished on all the products she uses, her personal mantra’s, and the best restaurants in big art cities. Read below for all of Dunn’s favorite ways to pamper herself and how to make the perfect smoothie. Fair-warning: You’re about to be majorly inspired…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
An ideal food day would start with a strawberry banana smoothie, yogurt with berries and/or avocado toast. For lunch, I would head over to the Beverly Hills Hotel and order my all time favorite salad, the McCarthy with a mint tea on ice. My ideal dinner would be dining at Spago Beverly Hills. I would order the chicken, and a white pizza to share…(if I was being naughty). My favorite cocktail from Spago is the Hello Kitty (who wouldn’t wait to order this drink just from the name alone).
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
I begin my day by hydrating with Essentia water, or Mountain Valley (love water in glass), and head over to my favorite workout, private training at Body By Simone, in West Hollywood. I love starting my morning like this, because by lunch, I feel like I have to eat super healthy, and my healthy morning gives me inspiration throughout the day to eat well. I am also absolutely obsessed with Fitbit Alta, which tracks your daily steps, and allows you to compete with your friends!
What are your morning and nightly beauty regimens?
In the morning, I cleanse with Kerstin Florians Foaming Cleanser followed by Knight Co.’s Complete Moisturizer, and Coola’s unscented face sunscreen SPF 30, on my face and top of my hands. Before applying makeup, I use Glossier’s priming moisturizer as a primer, and then apply foundation, and blush/bronzer as my daily morning routine.
At night, I cleanse and remove makeup with Knight Co.’s Daily Face Wash, and tone with Thayers Witch Hazel (Rose Petal). I apply eye cream, and I go between Joanna Vargas Revitalizing Eye Cream, and Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Cream. I am currently obsessed with the Dr. Brandt Age Defier Magnet Mask, which you remove with a magnet (you have to google it – it’s beyond cool and easy to remove), and will use Kate Somerville Eradicate Acne Treatment if I am having a breakout.
A beauty mainstay that hasn’t changed since your teen years…
My mom raised me to always wash my face at night, and that is probably something that has always stuck with me. It doesn’t matter what time I get home, I always cleanse, and complete my beauty routine, even if I’m so sleepy.
Five beauty products you can’t live without…
Three beauty products we always will find in your purse..
What’s your perfect smoothie comprised of? Your perfect salad?
My perfect smoothie would consist of berries, bananas, honey, yogurt and Coconut Water.
My favorite salads seem to be similar to a deconstructed Cobb, including chicken, goat cheese, turkey bacon, tomatoes, avocado, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side.
What are your travel beauty routines? How do you stay fresh on planes?
While traveling, I make sure to keep my skin and body hydrated. Nothing feels better then a clean face, especially while traveling, and I try to have a no makeup policy while flying, as my skin tends to break out easily during travel. My go-to is the Kate Somerville Clarifying Cleanser which I fly with and make sure to cleanse my skin at least once or twice on a flight. Half way through a long flight, I will apply a Sk-II Facial treatment mask, which hydrates and fits in my travel bag well. Upon landing, I’ll give my hair a brush out with my favorite travel brush, the Great Lengths small paddle brush and put the Oribe purse size collection in my carry on, which includes the Dry texture Spray, Anti Humidity Spray, Superfine Hair Spray, and Hair Refresher. The collection is compact, and has everything you need to keep your tresses looking amazing and feeling clean at any time. I will also throw on some additional moisturizer, such as the Kate Somerville oil-free moisturizer, which is easy to travel with and won’t make your skin oily.
What’s your favorite makeup look for Art Basel?
Miami is always super humid, so I take weather into account for beauty looks. I love a clean dewy look, starting with the amazing primer Embryolisse’s Lait Créme Concentré. I will apply a light foundation, like the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation, followed by the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow, which is a great 2-1 blush and bronzer. With humidity, I always keep my Chanel Les Beiges powder in my purse, for touch-ups throughout the day in case of any extra shine. My hairdressers, Nikki and Riawna at Nine Zero One Salon, turned me onto the Oribe Anti-humidity hair spray, which is my best hair option!
Who in your career were you most excited about buying your artwork? What did they buy?
My first true sale was to my dad. This was by far the most exciting sale, because he has always been so supportive, so for him to actually purchase a piece from me was such an honor!
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from my daily life, my friends, and my family. I love to bounce ideas off my parents, my fiancé and my best friends. I work on so many fun projects, and am so close to everything I work on, so it’s always good to get a second opinion or idea.
Best and worst foods/drinks for your skin and hair…
Sugar and carbs are the worst for my skin and hair, and I can see instant results the following day after eating naughty. I have seen a big difference eating clean, which also helps with inflammation. I have been eating a lot of healthy fats recently, such as avocados, macademia nuts and oils, which has made me feel so much better.
What’s your personal mantra?
Where I am right now is exactly where I need to be. Be present and enjoy the ride…and put my phone down!
Where do you go to pamper yourself?
I have some secret spots that are my go to for a day of pampering. Thibiant in Beverly Hills is my favorite spot for massages. It’s great because it’s located in the middle of Beverly Hills, so it’s convenient and an absolute staple in Los Angeles.
Joanna Vargas, New York celebrity facialist just opened her first location in Los Angeles, and I am absolutely hooked. They have amazing lasers, facials, and a list of treatments that give you instant results. Perfect before a red carpet event!
Beauty Park Medical Spa by Nurse Jamie in Santa Monica is a great place to pamper, as it has so many different spa and medical treatments available all in one place. I just tried the Sculpsure Laser Treatment a few weeks back, which is a non-invasive laser treatment, that I loved!
Love Your Body Endermologie on La Cienaga in West Hollywood, is one of my weekly go-to spots, as I have a disease called Lipedema, and have additional inflammation. Endermologie improves blood and lymph flow throughout the body, and most patients can see instant results!
What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?
I absolutely love traveling, and trying new foods, and restaurants.
Here is a list of my favorites around the world:
London – Sketch
Miami – PB Station, Prime 112
New York – Locanda Verde
Los Angeles – Polo Lounge, Cecconis, The Ivy
Bangkok, Thailand – Eat Me
Auckland, New Zealand – Jervois Road Steak House
Sydney, Australia – Icebergs
