Roadies’ Joy Williams

When we found out one of our favorite directors and screenwriters – Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) – was making his first foray into television with the Showtime show Roadies, we had to catch up with one of its stars to see what was up.

Turns out Joy Williams – the real life singer-songwriter who plays Janine on the show –  is much more than meets the ear. In addition to starring in Crowe’s latest project, she recently released an acoustic version of her solo album Venus, which debuted at #1 on Itunes. Williams was also part of that of that Grammy winning duo we all loved – The Civil Wars – who skyrocketed to fame with their 2012 collaboration with Taylor Swift for The Hunger Games. Long story short, there’s not much Williams hasn’t done,  and we caught up with her on meditation, Pilates, the set of Roadies and her gluten-free lifestyle that somehow still sounds so, so delicious…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

Breakfast: Double espresso, 2 eggs over easy, with a side of gluten-free avocado toast and fresh berries. Fresh pressed juice as a snack mid-morning: I love Kale, Lemon, Green Apple, Pineapple, Ginger (with a wee bit of fresh jalapeño for kick).

Lunch: I’m a sucker for a good, old-fashioned BLT, but on gluten-free bread and add avocado. Sensing a avocado trend yet? California girl forever.

Mid-afternoon snack: Chips and fresh salsa.

Dinner: Rosemary filet mignon, roasted garlic and shallot mashed potatoes, and a side salad of fresh lemon, olive oil and balsamic reduction dressed arugula salad. Top it off with a great red wine and I’m a happy camper. Dessert would just be second helpings. (Or maybe the dark chocolate peanut butter cups from Trader Joe’s, because I’m addicted to them right now).

How do you practice beauty from the inside out?

Beauty from within is key. If you feel weary and worn down, it’ll show. We’ve all been there. It happens. But what I’ve learned is that regular meditation time (sitting in stillness), pilates, going outside with my four-year-old son and exploring is good for my mind and body.

When it comes to food, we try to eat as healthy as we can. We are mostly dairy and gluten-free in our house, and shoot to buy organic whenever we can. Simple food – naturally colorful, amazing flavor, good for you, unadulterated in as many ways as possible – can only help our bodies in the modern day. And then there are days you make pancakes and then order a hamburger later and you gotta let go. Life is meant to be lived fully and freely. That’s beautiful to me.

What would your last meal be? Who would it be with?

Taco Bell…just kidding. I’d keep it short and sweet: A fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon and smoked sea salt chocolate caramels. Give me death by chocolate.

How do you always start your day? What’s your go-to breakfast?

I start my day always with the sound of little feet coming down the hall, followed by my son jumping into our bed. It’s always early, but at least it’s sweet. My go-to breakfast (which is also kid approved for ease): Cheese eggs, chicken maple sausage, and double espressos with almond milk (for us grown-ups who get woken up at 7:30am every morning, no matter what time we’ve gone to bed the night before). Yay, caffeine.

Funniest thing that’s happened on the set of Roadies

Watching Rafe Spall (who plays Reg) get hit in the face with a pie, about twenty times in a row.

As a singer, what does your diet on the road usually look like?

Like a quest for health foiled by reality and whatever is around to forage.

What’s always in your fridge?

Almond milk, arugula, fresh shredded parmesan cheese, bacon and berries.

What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?

There are too many cities and restaurants to name! Touring will do that to you. But ones coming to mind right this second?

San Francisco: Zuni Cafe, Foreign Cinema

New York: Freeman’s, Il Buco and Aurora Soho

Austin: Freedmen’s, John Mueller Meat Co

Nashville: Bastion restaurant, Rolf & Daughters

In the same vein as ‘what is the new black’ in fashion, what’s the new potato right now?

Stranger Things on Netflix. I can’t tell you how much I adored that series. Season 2 can’t come fast enough.
