As we learned last week exfoliation is the key to healthy and vibrant looking skin, and while there are many store bought options around, we love that fact that our beauty guru Joanna Vargas has given us some DIY recipes to try at home. Plus they’re edible, so clearly we like them even more.
From brown sugar to corn meal the natural ingredients in these recipe provide the gentle exfoliation your skin requires to stay silky smooth, and wont expose you to any of the harsh chemicals and unknown ingredients that can often be found in store bought exfoliators. After all, if it’s good enough to eat, it definitely has to be good enough to apply topically, right? Scroll through below to see all of Joanna’s at home scrubs for the face and body.
DIY Face Scrub
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup corn meal
1/4 cup Grapefruit juice
Cool in the fridge to thicken. Scrub onto the face for two minutes, then rinse.
The yogurt in this scrub is a great anti-inflammatory and its lactic acid will serve as a peel. The cornmeal of course, is the physical exfoliant – I like to use an exfoliant that contains both a physical and a “chemical” component. The grapefruit juice contains salicylic acid and is very cleansing. This scrub smells wonderful and is like having a mini facial right at home!
A Scrub/Mask Combo
1 tbsp Almond powder
1/4 cup honey
1 tbsp brown sugar
3 tbsp yogurt
Mix together. Scrub onto skin for 30 seconds. Then leave on for 10 minutes to hydrate the skin.
DIY Exfoliation Mask and Foot Scrub
1/4 cup Honey
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 tbsp olive oil
Refrigerate for 15 minutes.
The brown sugar is super soft on the skin but just strong enough to really clean out your pores. The yogurt has lactic acid which will gently exfoliate you all over while the honey hydrates. It will leave the skin and body really looking fresh and clean!
DIY Matcha Body Scrub
1/3 cup coconut oil
1 cup of coconut palm sugar
1 tablespoon of organic matcha powder
1 tsp organic honey
Mix all ingredients together and put into a mason jar. Gently scrub all over the body, then rinse in the shower. Should be used 2-3x per week.
Coconut oil helps to soothe and hydrate the skin as it’s loaded with omega 3 fatty acids. It also gets rid of inflammation. Sugar helps to exfoliate the skin without drying it out like salt can. High levels of polyphenols in matcha help to increase skin cell growth. The more collagen production your skin has, the more firm and healthy it will be. Adding a tiny bit of honey helps to make this scrub exfoliate and deeply moisturize at the same time.
Exfoliating Mango Face Mask
1 tsp organic greek yogurt
1/2 cup pureed or mashed mango
1/2 tsp organic honey
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Apply to the skin and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with a warm cloth.
Mangoes are high in vitamins A and C, making them the perfect skin treatment that all skin types can benefit from. Yogurt is a natural anti-inflammatory, the higher the fat content the more hydrating it is for the skin, which makes greek yogurt especially beneficial. It also has lactic acid, which adds an extra hint of gentle exfoliation. Honey delivers that extra hydration without clogging the pores, allowing for your skin to simultaneously be resurfaced and hydrated.
