The gorgeous actress Skyler Samuels is one of those multi-faceted phenomenons who makes us feel slightly unproductive. Recently launching a personal styling app called Tipster, Samuels has – in addition – taken time away from acting (where she’s graced sets like The Duff and Scream Queens) to go back to Stanford to finish up college. Don’t worry though: She’ll be back to many an acting project soon enough.
The point is, Samuels is no doubt worthy of a Woman Crush Wednesday, especially once she told us she’s a huge foodie whose always dreamed of answering a question like “What’s your ideal food day?” Hollywood’s newest It girl is a self-proclaimed dessert-loving, yogi who never deprives herself an In-N-Out burger when she’s craving it…We’re on board.
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
I’m a total foodie, so this question is one I am constantly dreaming of. I live for good food! Breakfast is one of my favorite meals of the day, so I would start with a cold brew ice coffee and avocado toast with a sunny-side egg on top. For lunch, I would opt for something light and refreshing, like sushi. I could eat spicy tuna tartare every single day. For dinner, I would end my day with my all-time favorite meal, homemade spaghetti pomodoro—to me there is nothing as cozy and delicious as a good bowl of pasta.
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
My beauty practice is constantly evolving, as I am constantly evolving. I try to center my beauty practice around listening to my body and adjusting accordingly. Sometimes routines I’ve done for a while stop working and I have to get creative and discover a new one that works for me. I recently started doing yoga and that has been an incredible journey for me. I’ve had some injuries in the past, and through yoga I am able to really focus on healing and improving my body in a way that doesn’t feel forced. I also find that yoga is like the best combination of therapy and the gym—I get an amazing workout in and I am able to center my mind and feel empowered. When it comes to beauty on the outside, I believe in less is more. I use a few simple products to upkeep my skincare and I pretty much leave my hair alone. Like, I don’t even own a blow dryer (although I probably should, because they can really come in handy sometimes).
What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?
Every morning I steam my face with a hot washcloth; it’s a great way to wake up my skin and also prep my face for my products. I love using Lina Hanson Global Serum. It’s the first thing that goes on my face in the morning and it smells and feels amazing. After that, I apply Origins Sheer Tint Release tinted moisturizer which I love because it gives me nice even coverage with a little SPF, and it’s super natural looking and buildable.
My nightly beauty routine varies depending on my skin. No matter what I always wipe off my makeup with a Simply Cleansing Facial Wipe. I then apply my cleanser, which I put onto my face dry, straight from the bottle. I use K-Rescue Calming PH Balance Cleanser. I apply it to my face like lotion, rubbing it in circles all over until it covers my face. Then I wet my cleansing pore by Honey Brush and I brush my face. I know that sounds kind of weird, but it feels incredible and it’s a great way for me to gently exfoliate and clean my skin without damaging it. After that I will either apply my Lina Hanson serum or do a gel face mask by Cotta or Boscia. I am absolutely obsessed with the precut face mask trend right now; they are so nourishing and so easy to use.
Tell us about your new app Tipster…
Tipster is the first ever stylist in your pocket where you can build your own virtual glam team. Tipster is an iOS mobile application that has hundreds of professional hair, makeup, and fashion experts available anytime to answer any questions users have seeking beauty and fashion advice.
What made you launch it? What had been your previous experience with personal styling?
I founded tipster with my co-founder Andrew Duplessie. Andrew wanted to make an app that focused on catering to the instant advice market and monetizing the social media followings of beauty and fashion influencers. I have long had an interest in beauty and fashion. It has been a cornerstone in my experience as an actor, as it is so inherent to the entertainment business. I am often asked by my friends “How did you do your hair up like that for that event?” – questions along those lines. I realized that though I sported those looks, I wasn’t the only one behind the making of them. Above all, I owe my best red carpet looks to the amazing fashion experts, makeup artists and hair stylists that I work with. Andrew and I got to talking one day and that’s when it struck us—what if we made a platform where beauty and fashion stylists could showcase their work and talk directly with users, so anyone anywhere could consult with a personal stylist of their choice. And alas, Tipster was born.
What’s the one style staple every girl should own?
I firmly believe in owning one good pair of jeans. A nice pair of jeans will last a long time, and can be dressed up or down a million different ways. A pair of nice, well-fitting jeans can give any outfit a tailored look that elevates the entire ensemble.
What other apps can you personally not live without?
I think I would have a really hard time if Instagram ever disappeared. I fell in love with Instagram the first time I used it and have now been using it for years. I am a visual person, so I love discovering my news, beauty tips, and more there. Also— I am addicted to following food blogs and puppy accounts on Instagram, and I just don’t think I could live without those.
What’s your perfect salad comprised of? Your perfect smoothie?
Perfect salad: Kale, goat cheese, dried cranberries, blackberries, and avocado. Perfect smoothie: Strawberry, banana, almond milk, and blueberries.
What’s your workout routine?
I do yoga a few times a week. I also try to squeeze in a few minutes of ab and glut circuits on days I don’t go to yoga, even if it’s only ten minutes or so. I also spend a lot of time running around and playing with my dog Matey. Chasing him in my yard can be quite the workout…he’s a speedy pup with lots of energy.
What’s your splurge breakfast? What’d your go-to weekday breakfast?
What’s always in your fridge? Your pantry?
This is kind of embarrassing, but if you didn’t know me, you’d think a six-year -old lived in my house based on how my fridge looks. I am always on-the-go, so I always have grab-and-go snacks like string cheese, yogurt/granola cups, or those little carrot and hummus snack packs. Basically, anything a kid would have in their lunchbox, I have in my fridge. My pantry always has a bag of chocolate covered pretzels; I can’t live with without them.
Do you cut anything out of your diet? If so, what is it?
I do not restrict myself when it comes to diet. I’ve never been interested in soda, so that’s not something I drink. I’m not much of a fast food fan either, but when I crave an In-N-Out Burger I do not hesitate. My food philosophy is to eat in a way that makes you feel the most healthy and happy in your own body. I also believe that life is too short not to eat dessert. I love dessert and am never ashamed to indulge my sweet tooth.
What’s always in your bag?
Oh geez…my bag is like Marry Poppins’ bag…who knows what’s in there. I always have my Fresh Sugar Rosé lip balm, a highlighter, a pen, a coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond, vanilla TicTacs, a doggie treat, my wallet, and a little polaroid photo of Matey.
What’s your idea of the perfect first date?
The perfect first date to me is one that is fun and relaxed in an effortless way. I’m never a fan of going to a movie or doing something where you can’t actually talk and get to know your date. I’m old school. I love picnics, or going to a good restaurant. I think sharing a good meal is a great way to bond with someone. I also love surprises, so I think it’s always fun when your date plans a fun activity or something spontaneous.
What are your favorite cities for food? what restaurants do you go to in each?
New York City is of course at the top of my food list. In NYC, I love going to Piccola Cucina; they have the best homemade pasta I’ve ever had. For dessert, I am definitely a fan of Dominique Ansel Bakery. There is always something delicious and sweet there. I love drinking coffee and eating ice cream in Paris, and you can’t really go wrong anywhere there because, well, you know, it’s Paris. My other all-time favorite restaurant is in Napa Valley, CA called Bistro Jeanty. Everything on the menu is simply delicious.
