4 DIY Summer Face Masks

This is how to glow this summer. The facialisist to the stars – Joanna Vargas – gave us four face masks that tackle summer needs having to do with sun sensitivity, soothing skin, refreshment and cooling. These masks are filled with a plethora of edible ingredients: I mean, we’re the new potato after all, correct?

This is the perfect mix of beauty from the inside out, and literally what you’re applying topically. It’s funny to think some of your greatest beauty mainstays could be in your fridge, but hey, that’s the future (it’s what we’ve always said). Tackle the four masks below and welcome the week with glowing skin. At the very least, these will no doubt make your Sunday better…

Cooling & Refreshing Mask

¼ cup yogurt

3 tbsp aloe

2 tbsp oat grass juice or wheat grass juice

2 tbsp crushed mint

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Apply to the skin and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Remove with a warm washcloth.

Mint, yogurt and aloe give this DIY mask the cooling sensation your skin craves during the summer months. They also provide anti-bacterial, exfoliating and skin-soothing benefits. Add some greens to this mask with oat grass juice or wheat grass juice for extra skin nutrition. They both help to stimulate lymphatic drainage and detox the skin.

Sun Damage/Sensitivity Fix

3 tbs aloe vera juice

1 tbs aloe vera gel

2 drops rose oil

Apply with a cotton ball to damaged area all over face. Leave on and let soak in. Remove any excess mask after 20 minutes or so with a damp washcloth and be gentle.

Aloes helps to relieve the harsh effects of overexposure to the sun. Add some rose oil to this for its sweet-smelling aromatic antibiotic properties, as well as high antioxidant levels. Apply daily after sun damage to accelerate your skins healing. Always wear SPF first!

Soothing Summer Peach Mask

½ fresh, ripe peach

½ teaspoon honey

2 tablespoons of plain yogurt

1 teaspoon of cold pressed grape seed oil

Mash the peach in a small bowl. Mix in the yogurt, honey and grape seed oil to form a thick paste. Apply directly to face for 20 minutes to reveal a glowing, clear complexion.

Peaches are packed with Vitamin C, which is excellent for tired skin, as well as blemishes. Add honey and yogurt for their anti-bacterial and smoothing properties. Grape seed oil is a magnificent oil sometimes forgotten. It contains Vitamins D, C and E, as well as linoleic acid, which strengthens cell membranes, reduces wrinkles and heals acne.

Chocolate Sundae Mask

1 tbsp whole milk (coconut milk can be substituted)

2 tbsp cacao powder

3 tbsp honey

½ banana mashed

Mix honey with cacao powder and make a fine thick paste. Add milk and mashed banana into the mixture and blend well. Apply a thin layer on your face and neck. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Remove with a warm washcloth.

Chocolate ice cream and summertime go hand in hand. Enjoy without the guilt with this chocolate sundae mask. Cacao powder is extremely high in antioxidant properties. It also contains omega 6 fatty acids, which helps in cellular healing. Adding milk to the mix creates gentle exfoliation with lactic acid. Banana and honey add antibacterial properties and a surge of moisture.
