DJ Ruckus

Dubbed by GQ as the “most sought after DJ in the world,” DJ Ruckus is definitely a name you should commit to memory. One look at his Instagram page and you’ll see the disc jockey hanging out with the likes of Oprah, Naomi Campbell, and Ms. Kardashian West — Not to mention he is also engaged to Victoria’s Secret model, Shanina Shaik. And if that wasn’t enough to convince us, he does parties for the likes of Alexander Wang and Louis Vuitton, and also teams up with his cousin Zoe Kravitz to perform at Art Basel and Coachella. Yes, we think it’s safe to say life is pretty sweet for DJ Ruckus. We met up with him recently in NYC to discuss everything from his current musical obsessions, to his favourite food cities, as well as the reason his fiancé doesn’t let him cook…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

Ideal food day is six meals split between protein shakes and meals – three of each.

Breakfast: Omelet with spinach, tomato, mushrooms and hot sauce.

Lunch: Hummus plate with chicken, falafel, grape leaves, feta cheese with a vinaigrette dressing.

Dinner: Sushi

I’d have protein shakes between each meal.

How do you always start your day? What’s your go to breakfast?

An omelet and a protein shake!

A few things you can’t stop listening to right now…

Alicia Keys – In Common

Kaytranada – Lite Spots

Jay-Z – The Blueprint

Drake – Controlla

The music app you can’t live without…

Pandora is still my favorite.

What do you and your fiancé like to cook together?

I don’t cook really; she throws down the cooking! She won’t even let me cook! I start to and she says, “Umm, you want me to do it?” She is scared of the outcome…

The most romantic thing the two of you have done…

Dinner in the Maldives at a table dug in to the sand with a private chef.

Advice you give her, and visa versa?

Advice I give to her is something my dad always told me: ‘Meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same.’

Where do you like to travel? What won’t you travel without?

I love traveling to places that I have never been before and then meeting all of the wonderful people that I have met on my travels and finding out who is the best person to guide me. Great times are always had that way! I won’t travel anywhere without lip balm – Kiehl’s lip balm preferably.

When in doubt, your go-to song is X…

When in doubt play Michael Jackson…any song.

You swear you were X in a past life…

I was a boxer in a past life.

What are your go-to snacks when traveling the world?

Beef jerky all day with chili lime or basil – beef or turkey. Whole Foods has some great ones made in house.

What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?

Hong Kong, London, Miami, and the Bahamas. ZUMA is my favorite restaurant in all three places (London, Hong Kong and Miami)! In Miami, I also like the Cuban food and in the Bahamas I love traditional boiled fish soup, Johnny cake with lemon in the soup, chicken in a bag and conch burgers!

Spots in NYC we need to go just for the music…

Tuesday night at Happy Ending is a ‘just for the music’ spot, otherwise Verboten in Brooklyn.

In the same vein as ‘what is the new black’ in fashion, what’s the new potato in music right now?

The new potato is Afrohouse and reggae influence in music; it’s all about island and African influence right now.
