Keke Palmer is the ultimate triple threat—actress, musician, and soon to be published author. As with many extremely successful people, Palmer started her career early (her first movie role came at ten-years-old and she released her first album as a teenager). Now, at the age of twenty-two, Keke is putting her wealth of knowledge to good use, helping fellow young women through the creation of her memoir and self-help guide I Don’t Belong to You: Quiet the Noise and Find Your Voice, which is set for release in October. We met up with Keke in LA recently to discuss her latest music video, her affinity for soul food, and why Snapchat is the new potato…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
Talking kindly to myself, working out and maintaining a healthy diet.
What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?
I don’t have too many. I get facials often and I almost always use my Boscia peeling mask at least once a week.
How do you typically start your day? What’s your go-to breakfast?
A smoothie, with protein.
What foods make your skin feel their best? Their worst?
Lean meats and veggies, no oils.
The workout you’re obsessed with right now…
I love it all. I’m majorly into butt workouts and using resistance bands.
You swear you were _______ in a past life…
A man (laughs)
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? The worst?
I don’t think I’ve had the worst. The best is to always keep a close relationship with God.
What about being a recording artist do you find most fulfilling?
The freedom of expression. I am not saying I don’t get that in all forms of art but it’s a different thing when you are a musician. It’s maybe the feeling you get performing live or knowing a song you are simply singing can make someone react and really impact them. I wrote the treatment for my recent Enemiez video because I’m so specific about my vision. It’s not even so much that I’m trying to be all on it and in control; it’s just that I know that people feel it more when it’s coming from me. I am all about team work, but if it’s supposed to represent you, it’s going to be driven by you more than anybody else.
What’s always in your bag?
My Monaaaay (laughs), makeup and lip gloss. I always have a touch-up kit with me!
What would you last meal be? Who would it be with?
My mom. We’d have my favorite soul food meal that my dad makes: Pork chops, mac n’ cheese, sweet potatoes and greens.
What advice would you give women looking in the mirror, and getting dressed in the morning?
If that’s not a bad bitch, I don’t know who is!
Your go-to healthy snacks…
Fruit and veggies with almonds – and sometimes those cool Justin’s packs.
What’s your perfect smoothie comprised of?
Fruit, almond butter, two scoops of soy protein, ice and almond milk.
What are your favorite cities for food? What are the restaurants you go to in each?
In the same vein as ‘what is the new black in fashion,’ what’s the new potato right now?
The New Potato is Snapchat. Everyone loves it, is either on it or confused by it. I’m obsessed right now!
