Supermodel Lindsay Ellingson

Supermodel and co-founder of Wander Beauty Lindsay Ellingson told us to stay in our pajamas as long as possible in the morning…we took her advice to heart. The point of her tip was to appreciate that no makeup look for as long as possible – and was followed by tips for the perfect no-makeup, makeup look (We really left this shoot feeling informed). We plugged the supermodel for all things food, wellness, beauty and lifestyle, including her favorite face mask, how to stay fresh on planes, her advice to women looking in the mirror and why the new potato is female entrepreneurs…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

Avocado toast with fresh grapefruit and a cup of English breakfast tea. I always carry almonds and dried fruits in my bag for snacks on-the-go. I love LuliTonix’s blended green juices; my favorite is Kick. For lunch I usually have a kale salad with chicken or hearty turkey chili. My husband and I love Cookshop; we eat there pretty often for dinner. My favorite is their Brussels sprout pizza!

How do you practice beauty from the inside out?

I start each day with warm water and lemon to keep my body alkaline and take plenty of vitamins and minerals. The most important way I practice beauty from the inside out is with gratitude. I keep a journal and every night before I sleep I write down three things I’m grateful for. I also love to cuddle and play with my cockapoo Carly. She lights up my life and there’s nothing more beautiful than a smile!

What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?

In the morning, I cleanse my skin with Bioderma Crealine and hydrate with a new moisturizer I’m trying from Sunday Riley called Tidal. It has brightening enzymes and hyaluronic acid which I love. I always start my makeup routine with my brows, I think it’s the most important feature on your face.

As creative director of Wander Beauty, my team and I were on the hunt to create the ultimate brow product; we are all brow obsessed. Our Frame Your Face Micro Brow Pencil has an ultra fine tip so that it actually mimics the shape of hair, which is perfect for achieving a more natural look and also makes it so easy to thicken your brow shape, which is what I like to do. Next, I apply mascara. My co-founder Divya Gugnani and I are working on a great one for Wander Beauty, which is coming out this fall. It’s incredible, and I can’t wait to share!

To achieve flawless no-makeup makeup skin, I use our Flash Focus Hydrating Foundation. It’s great to use as all over foundation or as a spot corrector; the hydrating formula really brightens my under eyes. It comes in five different shades and works on all skin tones. I also love to enhance my look with our On-the-Glow Blush in Coral Rose on the apples of my cheeks, and our Nude Glow Illuminator on my brow and cheekbones.

Finally, I apply our new Wanderout Dual Matte Lipstick. I complete my look in less than ten minutes and can fit everything in my bag for touch-ups throughout the day! At night I cleanse my skin with Ildi Pekar Honey Cleanser and exfoliate three times a week with Dr. Lancer’s The Method Polish. Finally, I deeply moisturize with Pratima Rejuvenating Essential Oil mixed with Pratima Vitamin C Liposome Serum which helps to deliver the oils deeper into your skin.

What’s the secret to choosing the absolutely perfect lipstick shade?

Creating shades women will love is my favorite part of my job! Our goal is to take all the guesswork out of choosing a lipstick by creating universally flattering shades that we try and test on a range of ethnicities. An easy rule to follow is to choose lipsticks that match your skin undertone. If you are cool, your skin is a little pinker, so you are most likely fair and burn easily in the sun – lipsticks with blue undertones look great on you. If you have warmer skin with yellow undertones and tan easily, warm shades look best on you.

When should one go nude? Red? Bright Pink?

With our new Wanderout Dual Lipstick, you can go nude, red or pink any time you want! We’ve created the perfect pair of lipsticks no matter what your plans may be. On one side is a pretty neutral and on the other is a fun pop of color perfect for a night out with your friends. I don’t believe in rules when it comes to choosing lipstick shades. I think women should be bold and wear colors that express their personalities and make them feel confident. For me, when I wear a brighter lip I like to keep my eyes toned down, with just mascara and a little smudge of our Slide Liner Gel Eyeliner in bronzed brown into my lash line. Of course, nothing pairs better with a nude lip than a sultry smokey eye!

Advice to women waking up, looking in the mirror and getting dressed..

Stay in your pajamas as long as possible! Only slightly kidding…But really, I think it’s great for all women to appreciate their, “I woke up like this” look. Nobody wakes up looking perfect; it’s so important for us all to love ourselves inside and out. Makeup is just the icing on the cake.

The best advice you’ve ever received…

Be courageous! It sounds so simple but has become my mantra in life whenever I’m facing fears or challenges.

What workouts are you obsessed with?

I used to be a competitive dancer and really miss it, so I started taking Barre classes which make me feel right at home again! I’m also loving Le Petit Studio which offers private Pilates classes tailored to the specific needs of your body.

Foods and drinks you find make you glow…

Mangos and oranges along with any dark green vegetables.

Three quick and easy workouts one can do at home…

1. I use ankle weights to tone my glutes and inner thighs. Start on all fours, lift your leg behind you, do 3 sets of 10 on each side and then pulse each leg up in the air for a minute.

2. Gently hold a chair at home for balance, stand in first position on your toes and bend your knees over your toes into a plié position. Pulse there for as long as you can, keeping your core tight.

3. Using the chair again, place a Pilates ball between your thighs and bend so your legs are in a 90-degree angle. Stay there and squeeze the ball in and out for a minute, this will really fire up your inner thighs. For a more advanced workout, stay in the same position but raise your heels so you’re on your toes.

Your favorite ab exercises…

I love to use a Pilates ball when doing ab work. Place the ball under your shoulder blades and lay back with your knees bent and head on the floor. Use your abs to lift your upper body into a crunch position. The ball creates more space to move in and ultimately a more challenging workout. You can also do bicycles and toe taps in this position.

Your favorite moisturizers…

I love to try and test everything. I tend to stay with all natural skincare brands. The ingredients I look for are active vitamin C to stimulate collagen and hyaluronic acid to plump any fine lines. I’ve always loved Ildi Pekar’s moisturizer which contains raw honey and rosehip oil to keep your skin looking fresh.

Do you have a favorite face mask? What is it?

I love using Klorane’s smoothing and relaxing eye patches while I do my makeup in the morning or before a big event; they make me look much more awake!

How do you always start your day? What’s your go to breakfast?

I start each day by giving my husband and cockapoo Carly a big kiss…yes, she sleeps right next to me! Next, I make a cup of tea and warm lemon water. My go-to breakfast is anything that will keep me energized. A protein shake with spinach, almond butter and frozen strawberries does the trick when I’m in a hurry and tastes great!

What are your favorite cities for food?

Paris and Maui (where I sent a portion of my honeymoon)

What restaurants do you go to in each?

Le Relais de l’Entrecote for the best steak frites in Paris. In Maui, Mama’s Fish House and Ono Farms for the freshest tropical fruits!

How do you stay fresh on planes?

I drink plenty of water of course and obsessively spray my face with rose water. I also travel with a silk sleep mask to help me rest and keep my skin hydrated.

Your go to healthy snacks…

Lately I can’t buy enough cauliflower. It’s great alone or with hummus, and you can even bake it with a little parmesan. Call me crazy but it’s so good!

What hair products can’t you live without?

Wen by Chaz Dean’s Smoothing Glossing Serum; it’s my red carpet must-have for healthy, shiny hair.

Are there any foods you cut out? Why?

I stay away from processed foods as much as I can and avoid anything with white flour. I notice a huge difference in my energy level and overall well-being.

In the same vein as what is the new black in fashion, what’s the new potato right now?

The new potato is female entrepreneurs. I especially admire companies like Rent the Runway, The Brave Collection and Glam Squad, all run by inspiring women.
