New Year, New Faces

It’s a new year, and that means a slew of new up-and-comers that inspire us on a day-to-day basis. Each week in January, we’ll be revealing new faces who are making us excited for 2016. Whether they are the newest face of a fashion campaign, an actress in the newest show on Broadway, or television’s next ‘It girl,’ young tastemakers about to explode onto the scene make us excited to come to work each day. This week, we’re focused on the entertainment industry; here’s who’s up…

Madeleine Arthur, Actress

There’s a new, extremely enticing show coming to ABC at the start of March – The Family – a thriller following a politician’s young son who returns after being presumed dead. Arthur will star as the young Willa Warren, and has already made her mark as Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz’s daughter in the Tim Burton film Big Eyes

Your ideal food day…

That’s hard because there are so many to choose from! An extravagant ideal food day might start with Greek yogurt and summer fruits (berries and nectarines), with a little bit of honey and granola, or sourdough bread with triple cream brie and jam on top! I would have a French style picnic lunch, maybe a baguette sandwich with a salad. Then for dinner a really good Indian curry accompanied by naan and chutney with a mango lassi. Last but not least, dessert! Chocolate molten cake or my mom’s Plum Kuchen.

Your goal for 2016…

To embrace and dig into as many acting challenges as possible – and I would also like to practice my violin more.

Your personal definition of beauty…

To me people are beautiful when they are kind, compassionate and their smile is shared through their eyes.

The splurge you always allow yourself…

Cheese!

Your saving grace beauty product…

Cocoa Butter Vaseline and a good hand cream.

The Instagram account you love…

I love exploring the world through @passionpassport.

Your childhood hero…

Captain Jack Sparrow…I even dressed up as him for Halloween one year.

If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be?

A secret agent!

Ana Villafañe, Actress/Singer

It was easy to fall in love with the spirited and beautiful Ana Villafañe, who is the hottest new face on Broadway in On Your Feet, a musical chronicling the lives and music of Emilio and Gloria Estefan. Villafañe stars as Gloria, and we’re excited to see what’s to come for this new face in theater…

Your ideal food day…

Breakfast is my jam. I make a mean French toast, but going out to brunch makes any day feel like a holiday. So, gluten-free banana pancakes, with maybe some egg whites, turkey bacon and a green tea. An ideal lunch is sushi, especially when I get adventurous and just let the sushi chef decide what to serve. I’m a sucker for spicy tuna and anything with salmon or scallops. Dinner would be Spanish style tapas. Bring on the Patatas Bravas, manchego cheese, Serrano ham and red wine. For dessert, it’s either some version of dark chocolate or ice cream with rainbow sprinkles. Midnight snack is a tie between gluten-free pizza with ham and mushrooms or a bowl of Honey Nut Chex with vanilla almond milk. I wish I could actually eat all of this in one day, but in reality I live off of apple slices and maple almond butter.

Your goal for 2016…

To trust the process and to trust my instincts. I tend to be very hard on myself, and sometimes it’s important to find balance and let go.

You can’t live without…

Music. I’m constantly playing music so there’s kind of a soundtrack to every moment. I feel bad for my neighbors because they must get sick of it when I’m having a Beyonce day or something.

Your childhood hero…

I’m lucky to have grown up with quite a few real life heroes. But as a child, I’d have to say Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. I was obsessed.

Your personal definition of beauty…

Genuine confidence and genuine kindness are the most beautiful things. In my opinion, true beauty is when you can elevate everyone around you. I’ve known many people who seem instantly less attractive because of a personality problem.

The quote that never ceases to motivate you…

Attitude determines attitude. (My Dad used to yell that out the car window when he’d drop us off at school. It was ridiculously embarrassing back then, but now I’m into it.)

The song you can’t get enough of…

Right now I’m having a major Alessia Cara moment. Her entire album (Know It All) is a perfect blend of soulful and playful, which matches my current headspace. Doing the show, eight times a week can get pretty heavy. Truth be told, I listen to the original Gloria Estefan records all the time. It helps me stay true her work and keeps my performance grounded. I never get enough of “Tradicion” because the energy gets me ready for anything.

Your dream role in a musical…

There are many! I’d love to eventually play Eva Peron in Evita, Mama Rose in Gypsy, Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard… all those beautifully complicated women. My dream would be to do a movie-musical because I’m so in love with both genres.

Rupert Evans, Actor

We love a handsome Brit; sometimes it’s the accent, sometimes it’s the dapper style, and in Rupert Evans case, it’s all of the above and then some. Evans has been killing it recently as the star of Amazon’s The Man In The High Castle and this month’s newest horror movie – The Boy – which comes out this weekend.

Your ideal food day…

Would involve a walk along the High Line in New York, making my way down to Bubby’s in Tribeca to have their Eggs Florentine. One of my favorite lunch spots is a sushi place in Vancouver (where I film The Man in the High Castle) called Tojo’s (the owner invented the California Roll!). In an ideal world, I would make my way back to New York for a nice steak dinner at Peter Luger!

Your goal for 2016…

…is to make a better chicken green curry. It’s never good enough, and I’ve just been given a new rice cooker for Christmas!

You can’t live without…

My wife’s shrimp risotto.

If you could be anyone for a day, it would be…

Obama, President of the United States (just for the day though!). I would love to try the White House food!  Can he order anything at any time? Can I get my hands on the files? Do aliens really exist?

The Instagram account you love…

@vutheara – his photos of Paris are breathtaking.

Your childhood hero…

Bruce Lee – I have to respect the guy, who did 100 press-ups and invented the protein shake (blending a 12 oz T-bone steak with vegetables) every day…

It’s not a meal without…

Some sort of sauce (I hate dry food).

Best advice you’ve ever received…

“Don’t worry too much. Your real problems will hit you when you least expect it and you’ll know what to do anyway.”

Your current mood…

Over the moon.

Your dream role…

Tootsie!
