As we welcomed in the newest season of Shameless last night, we figured there was no better time to pick the brain of the gorgeous Mrs-Robinson-esque character who plays Lip’s sexy professor, actress Sasha Alexander (She also just won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Cable Actress for her starring role on Rizzoli & Isles). And did we mention she’s Sophia Loren’s daughter-in-law?
If you followed the show’s last season, you know Alexander is no stranger to showing skin, so we made sure to find out how the half-Italian, half-Serbian star maintains her radiance. We talked Tracy Anderson, gifting for foodies, and her favorite hand wipes…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
My husband Edoardo’s scrambled eggs with cream and parmeggiano for breakfast. Lunch at Public School. I love their Kale Caesar Salad and Crispy Ahi Tuna Tacos. Dinner starts with a caprese, followed by a filet mignon with peppercorn sauce and a side of fresh steamed spinach at Locanda Portofino. Dessert would either be a coconut sorbet at Locanda Portofino or a few bites of the Nutella bread pudding at FORMA in Santa Monica.
How do you practice beauty from the inside?
I love food – and I love to workout. So I balance it. I try to stick to a clean diet of mostly proteins, vegetables and fruits and low on my carbs. I stay away from too much sugar; it makes me feel tired and low energy. I only have one cup of coffee a day, and a green juice as often as possible. It’s great for the skin. I also meditate which helps clear my mind and stay happy and I am committed to the Tracy Anderson Method for cardio dance and muscular work. It challenges me and make me sweat so much that I feel completely energized.
What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?
In the morning, I exfoliate my face with Dr. Lancer’s Polish, and moisturize with Le Mieux Essence Moisturizer (so light and clean feeling), followed by a sunscreen like Skinceuticals Physical fusion UV Defense.
If I am wearing any makeup it will usually be Jouer Tinted Moisturizer, a blush like Coralista by Benefit, Truly Thrilling Creme Blush by Honest Beauty, or Dior blush. I also use Diorshow mascara, and a light color on my lips like Spanish Pink by Tom Ford or Truly Kissable Lip Crayon by Honest Beauty in any of their colors.
In the evening, I use a Clarisonic brush to clean my skin well with Brave Soldiers Clean Skin facial cleanser. I follow with a lot of serum. I love Kinara/Olga Lorencin’s Lactic Acid Serum and I combine Reparative Nutrient Serum and Weightless Infusion Primer from her as well. Lots of Kinara Eye Cream as well.
Where do you love to travel? What won’t you travel without?
Paris, Rome, Geneva and Montenegro. I won’t travel without my Rimowa carry-on and a Clare V. pouch with my initials on it that my best friend gave me for my birthday. It is filled with some Egyptian Magic in a little bottle that I can use on my lips, or areas that feel dry, Neosporin, Evian Water Spray, Tarte’s Tipsy Cheek Stain for a little color and La Mer Moisturizer and a few pictures of my children and family.
What is the best beauty advice your Mother-in-law [Sophia Loren] has ever given you?
Dont smoke or drink too much. Get sleep.
Is there a recipe your mother-in-law makes that she has passed down to you? What is it?
Everything from her cookbook Recipes and Memories. The saltimbocca is a favorite. And all those recipes are staples in our home.
What’s always in your bag?
Lots of lip moisturizers, G.U.M. flossers (because I always get things in my teeth), wintergreen mints or Tic Tacs, handy wipes from The Honest Company (they come in a perfectly sized package), maybe a scarf, and always a book.
What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurant do you go to in each?
In Paris, Le Relais de L’Entrecote. Their french fries are amazing. In Lyon, Le Sud for fish. In Rome, Piperno for the Jewish artichokes. In Geneva, Il Mirtillo. The mozzarella is shipped daily from Naples. In Megeve, France, La Sauvageonne for the black truffle risotto and the disco DJ during dinner. Amazingly fun!
Five great gift ideas for foodies…
Fresh cheeses from Provence from Fromages.com, a basket of Italian goodies from Guidi Marcelli in Santa Monica, fresh pies monthly from PorchPies.com, wines year round from wineenthusiast.com, and caramel corn. GarrettPopcorn.com makes the best and they come in these great metal containers!
Best advice you’ve ever received and why…
Don’t be afraid to say no. Refusing to do something defines you just as much, sometimes more, than accepting.
Words to both eat and act by…
Be inclusive but in moderation – and sometimes splurge.
In the same vein as ‘what is the new black?’ in fashion, what’s the new potato right now?
Cleaning the gutters in preparation for El Nino, the new deli Gjusta in Venice, and all the exhibits at The Broad Museum in downtown LA.
