Lunch With…

Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein are the quintessential indie film couple in two ways: They’re a real-life couple that reminds you of the relationship in your favorite indie rom-com, and they also make indie films together; so there you have it. Per usual, we decided it was high time to crash lunch with the couple, and find out all about how they met and what they’ve worked on.

Turns out, some of their films have been based on their own story, which all started in theatre school at NYU. Zoe was two years older than Daryl and she invited him to a party at The Frying Pan. They hit it off (because who doesn’t at TFP?) and Zoe drunkenly wrote her name on his arm. The rest, they’d usually say, is history. But in this case, it wasn’t as simple as that…

After a year-and-a-half of dating, they decided to incur a sort of half-and-half rule. They’d spend half of the week together, and half of the week apart (during which, there was a don’t-ask-don’t-tell open relationship policy, and they weren’t allowed to be in touch). They did the half-and-half arrangement for a year (we have a feeling some of you are getting ideas right now), which inspired them to co-write Breaking Upwards, their first movie together (in which they both starred, and Daryl directed). So there you have it; make progressive relationship moves and you may just become a great filmmaker.

The two are now attached at the hip – and married! – on a full-time basis, so something worked. Their latest film, Consumed, is a dramatic thriller that explores the world (and dangers) of GMOs. It’s currently being released through a theatrical on-demand platform called Gathr, which is completely based on crowdsourcing and consumer demand. Anyone in America can see the film in any city by going online and either signing up for a screening, or signing up to host one themselves. We weren’t sure how we felt after hearing this couple’s story; super lame for not being so progressive, or super inspired. Either way, the fresh salad with veggies was phenomenal…

Here’s a recipe for a great green salad. Snoop our dinner with Rebecca Minkoff and Gavin Bellour, or have lunch with Lance Bass
