When we shot designer Jenni Kayne in Los Angeles, we immediately drove to her store in West Hollywood afterwards to purchase the outfit she was wearing. We also tried (less successfully) to stay in her home as long as humanly possible; it’s easily one of our favorite spaces we’ve shot in. And now, Kayne has moved from one gorgeous home in Beverly Hills to another in Santa Monica, and we could think of no better way to attempt to temper our envy by getting her guide to the new neighborhood.
Here’s a day in the life of Jenni Kayne, a.k.a. a map to all things Santa Monica…
Jenni Kayne’s Guide to Santa Monica
I recently moved to Santa Monica from Beverly Hills, and I’m loving living on the Westside! It’s such a wonderful neighborhood to raise my kids…we’re just a few miles from the beach, the air is fresh and salty, and both of my kids attend school nearby. Another benefit is that the rest of my family lives in Santa Monica as well. It’s so special that my kids are growing up spending time with my parents and sisters.
Workout: Tracy Anderson
Right around the corner from where I live, Tracy’s studio delivers the most amazing workout – I’ve never seen such quick results. Although I’m totally uncoordinated, I keep coming back because I love what it does for my body.
Ice Cream: Sweet Rose Creamery
The most delicious hand-crafted, small batch, seasonal ice cream. They have a location right next to my store at the Brentwood Country Mart, and I love to bring the kids over when we all stop by the store. My kids love their mint chip, and I am obsessed with the sorbets.
Hands down the best Italian restaurant on the Westside, Giorgi Baldi is an incredibly romantic spot and one of our favorites for date night. Their pastas are insane, but I always order their halibut with cherry tomatoes and the polenta to start.
Another dinner favorite is Rustic Canyon. I love their ever-changing, farmers market-inspired menu, particularly the vegetables and small plates.
Also next to my store at the Brentwood Country Mart, Farm Shop’s artisan market is one-stop shopping for specialty cheeses and wines, and the restaurant side is the perfect spot for a fresh and local breakfast or lunch.
I love the Tavern…The larder section is always stocked with amazing on-the-go options that feel far from your average takeout. And the restaurant: perfection. I love everything Suzanne Goin touches, and was so excited when she opened on the Westside.
Brunch: Ivy at the Shore
An old-school California favorite – I can’t get enough of their huevos rancheros, and my kids go crazy for the scones, waffles and french toast.
Ride: Sullivan Canyon
Riding horses has always been a passion of mine, and it’s been really special to share this experience with my daughter Ripley, who now loves to ride as well. I started riding at Sullivan Canyon a few years ago and love it – you can’t beat the location and the grounds are gorgeous.
Shopping and lunch with the family: The Brentwood Country Mart
The Brentwood Country Mart is amazing because it really has something for the whole family. Rip and Tan love getting a chicken basket and french fries at Reddi Chick (an LA staple) and then going on the rides in the courtyard…followed by ice cream at Sweet Rose. For women’s clothing, I of course love Jenni Kayne, Unionmade for men’s, Poppy and Toy Crazy for the kids, and then Diesel (the bookstore) and Selima et Benjamin Optique for all of us.
Juice: Pressed Juicery
Co-founder Hayden Slater is like family, and I’ve been drinking their juices since they launched. I have at least one every single day and keep my fridge at home stocked for the kids. My favorites: the Greens 1, the Coconut Cinnamon Water, and the Lemon Lavender Honey Activated Charcoal.
Movies: The Aero Theatre
This Santa Monica institution has been around since 1940, and is the perfect place to catch a classic movie.
Park: Rustic Canyon Park
Such a great park, and one of our favorite places to take the kids and our dogs (Chachi and The Dude) to play.
I have two stores in LA, and I love living a just few minutes away from my Brentwood location. I stop in almost daily to merchandise and check in with my team. We carry Jenni Kayne footwear and apparel, apothecary, products for home…all of my favorite things in one spot. My stores are always evolving, but the aesthetic stays true – they’re a real reflection of me and near and dear to my heart.
Also amazing: Savannah on Montana. This beautifully curated boutique has been around forever and carries all the best lines.
Coffee: Caffe Luxxe
My favorite coffeehouse on the Westside, Caffe Luxxe makes the best iced green tea, and my kids love the croissants.
This superfood café is a Santa Monica must. My faves: Lisa’s Lean and Green Smoothie and their Power Shots.
