The Flatiron area is not quite a gold mine when it comes to dining options, but Upland’s new American fare surely takes a step towards changing that. Illuminated jars of preserved lemons line the walls of the spacious restaurant on 26th and Park, giving it a warm, yellow hue to set the mood for a romantic, but not stuffy meal. The food is California-inspired, but don’t let that fool you into expecting kale salads and all things macrobiotic. Instead, expect seasonal, fresh ingredients and flavors with Italian overtones, found in dishes such as estrella pasta with sautéed chicken livers, rosemary and sage, bone-marrow crostino, and beef tartare with mushroom, puffed farro, anchovy and egg yolk.
