She produces viral videos, she makes a mean green smoothie and she told us three apps we simply cannot live without. The twenty-six-year-old YouTube sensation Ingrid Nilsen is kind of our modern day Martha Stewart (Martha, we still love you). With over 3 million youtube subscribers, Nilsen does what we love most: She blurs the lines between style, fashion and food. Here’s what she has to say on – well – everything, including killer advice to twenty-something women….
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
It would be a spontaneous surprise from start to finish. I’d love to drive aimlessly all day with a friend and just see where we end up!
If someone wanted to produce a viral video, what advice would you give him or her?
Don’t set out with the goal of making it viral. It’s that simple! In my opinion, the best viral videos are the ones that capture organic and sometimes unexpected moments.
What’s your personal definition of good content?
Loving your job can be both a blessing and a curse. You’ll experience euphoric highs and conflicted, difficult lows. Navigating these waters can be tricky, which is why creating good content goes beyond the actual content you create. I think it’s really about having a personal vision; sticking with it and setting goals that are reflected and injected into your work. Personally, I have three goals: to live authentically, to help others and to cultivate loving relationships. When I put those elements into something I’m creating, it’s fulfilling and meaningful. That, to me, is the ultimate definition of good content.
Your other favorite ‘YouTube sensations’ and why…
I always say Estée Lalonde (essiebutton) when I’m asked this question and I’ll keep saying it because it’s true! When I watch Estée, I feel like I’m in the presence of a friend that was missing from my life puzzle. She’s beautiful, smart, hilarious, and makes beauty/lifestyle videos that are truly a reflection of her unique aesthetic and personality. Outside of the beauty community, I love Hannah Hart (MyHarto). Hannah brings joy to the world by simply existing and you can see that the minute you watch one of her videos. Her spirit is passionate, magnetic and you can’t help but be drawn in. I also just really enjoy watching her drink and cook! She makes me hungry. She makes me laugh. She makes me think. She’s seriously the best.
What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?
I’ve found that a simple routine works best for me, so here’s what I do and use!
Morning: I use the Simple Micellar Cleansing Water to wash my face. It’s free from harsh chemicals and takes ten seconds to use! I put a little bit on a cotton pad, sweep it across my face and that’s it. No rinsing needed. Easy peasy! Then I follow up with moisturizer. I’ve been using the Origins A Perfect World SPF 25 Age Defense Moisturizer with White Tea. I like that it has SPF, so you have automatic protection from incidental sun exposure while still getting the benefits of a regular moisturizer. As for my everyday makeup, I like to keep mine fresh and minimal – a little bit of the Laura Mercier translucent powder to prevent shine, Covergirl Clump Crusher Waterproof Mascara to open up my eyes, Anastasia brow pencil for subtle definition, and a bright, fun color like NYX Matte Lipstick in Indie Flick to finish off the look.
Night: Cleansing oils are the best for removing makeup! My favorite is the Boscia Makeup Break Up. Massage a couple of pumps onto dry skin and makeup melts away. Waterproof makeup doesn’t stand a chance against this stuff! The Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate has been my go-to for years. It’s oil that quickly absorbs into your skin and makes it look radiant in the morning. Oh, and if you travel a lot, this might be your new BFF. It works wonders on fatigued skin! Basically, this stuff is magic in a bottle.
What beauty products can’t you live without? What do you use each for?
Smith’s Minted Rose Lip Balm – This may be the greatest thing that has ever touched my lips! I always have a tube in my bag or in my pocket. It helps with dry lips and leaves a fresh, tingly feeling behind.
Bright/statement lipsticks – I’m a girl that loves wearing almost no makeup and then throw in a bold, statement lip. NARS Heat Wave, NARS Schiap, and NARS Ingrid are some of my favorites. I’m probably a little biased when it comes to that last pick, though.
What’s always in your bag?
My wallet, which is actually just a sleeve for cards because I don’t like carrying a ton of stuff with me. Hair ties and bobby pins, which are basically the equivalent of gold for people with longer hair. My keys (hopefully!); I’m always forgetting them!
A go-to weeknight recipe…
I love this Soba Noodle Salad. It’s super easy, fast and delicious!
SOBA NOODLE SALAD
8 oz. buckwheat soba noodles
⅔ cup creamy almond butter
½ cup coconut aminos (or soy sauce)
5-6 Tablespoons fresh lime juice
4 Tablespoons sesame oil
2-3 Tablespoons honey
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 Tablespoon white vinegar
Sriracha (to taste)
The perfect smoothie…
GREEN MONSTER SMOOTHIE
– 2 frozen bananas
– 5 pieces of kale
– tart apple
– 2 cups coconut almond milk
What three apps do we have to download to make our lives easier?
Postmates – Food from restaurants that don’t normally deliver? Someone to pick up random stuff from the drugstore? Late night French fries and ice cream? Yes to all of the above!
Simply Being – This is a meditation app that’s great for beginners. You can customize the sounds/music and there’s a soothing, guiding voice to help you let go of everything around you. Allowing time for self-reflection is important, even if it’s only for a few minutes. It’s crazy how much meditation can clear your head!
Snapchat – I don’t know if this makes life easier, but it’s definitely fun! I keep up with my friends’ stories so I can see what’s going on in their lives. It’s a great way to stay connected without being invasive.
The Instagram accounts you can’t live without and why…
whiskandwhittle – Emily and Corey are the cutest couple! Emily bakes gorgeous and yummy treats while Corey makes her baking tools. Cue the collective, “Awwwww!”
AndrewKnapp – An amazing photographer who also takes lots of photos of his dog, Momo. There’s a “Where’s Waldo?” element to his photography because sometimes Momo is hidden somewhere in a beautiful photograph. It’s art! It’s fun! It includes a cute dog! It’s pretty awesome.
Advice for other girls in their twenties…
If you feel pressure to have it all figured out, don’t. Everyone is trying to figure things out! Life is wonderful. Life sucks. Life is weird. Learn, evolve, roll with the punches and just know you’re not alone. We’re all in this together.
What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?
New York City, hands down! My current favorite is a restaurant called Estela. They serve small plates that are meant to be shared and the food is incredible. I mean, it was named one of the best new restaurants in the U.S. for a reason!
