Sutton Foster is one of those actresses who doubles as both an onscreen and theater performer. She can act, she can sing, she can dance…we believe that’s what they call a triple threat in the industry, is it not? With the Tony’s coming up this weekend, we caught up with the two-time winner on her new show Younger, her workout routine and just how she thinks you can get your significant other into musicals…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
I’m a bit of a creature of habit – I tend to eat the same things every day. For breakfast, coffee with cream, an apple, a green juice or eggs with avocado. Lunch might be homemade chicken salad with avocado or a peanut butter smoothie. For dinner, salmon with some type of roasted vegetable or a hamburger.
What are the worst foods/drinks for your singing voice?
I guess dairy products…and anything that makes you burp.
What’s your workout routine? What workouts can’t you live without?
I work out at a gym called Serious Strength. It’s super high weight, super slow. No momentum, just strength. It has completely changed my body. And I love Pilates. I work out at Pilates Reforming NY and it is the best. It keeps my body in ‘dance’ shape.
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
I truly believe that beauty comes from within. I’m not a big make-up person – or even fashion person. I wanted guys and friends to like me for who I was, not what I looked like. And frankly, I just don’t care enough about all that stuff. When I turned thirty I really started to take care of myself. I grew up on junk food, soda, and crap. Something happened when I turned thirty, and I started to take care of my body; I got a trainer, my diet improved. Now I just recently turned forty and I think I’m taking care of myself better than ever. I’m very aware of everything I put in my mouth – the ingredients, whether the meats are antibiotic free, or the fruits and veggies are organic. I am probably the happiest I’ve ever been with my body.
Best leg workouts…
Leg press, squats and lunges. In Pilates – feet in straps – leg circles, frog, peter pan, hammer…all of those kick my butt, literally.
Best arm workouts…
For me, it’s the shoulder muscles that I struggle with the most. Sometimes I get to the shoulder press and it just makes me sad. So it’s the one I need the most work on.
How to ease one’s boyfriend into musical theater…
Well, I’m lucky because my husband is a big fan of theatre. Play your boyfriend the soundtrack to Sweeney Todd. It’s badass and cool and if he doesn’t like it then I don’t know what else to tell you.
What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?
I’m now obsessed with facial oils. So in the morning I use Boscia Tsubaki Beauty Oil and eye cream. My favorite skin care line is SKYN – I love their eye cream and night cream and basically everything they make. At night I wash my face with cleanser…I think right now I’m using Fresh Soy Cleanser. I use a peel pad from SKYN, retinol oil from REN and SKYN’s oxygen infused night cream, as well as SKYN eye cream.

What do you eat before and after performing in a taxing show (singing and dancing)?
My go to dinner while I’m performing is a salad from Chop’t! I love the Mexican Caesar salad with spicy chicken and avocado.
Your favorite musicals as a kid…
Annie, Sound of Music, and Les Miz!
What can’t you stop listening to right now?
I don’t tend to listen to music…I like the quiet.

FUN HOME – it’s a masterpiece.
