We don’t know how to play the sport, but that doesn’t mean we can’t recognize a cute Polo player when we see one. Nacho Figueras doubles as both a Ralph Lauren model and a polo player, and in light of tomorrow’s Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic (an event we’ve been planning our wardrobe for, for quite some time now), we decided to catch up with him on all things food and style…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
I start with Mate Tea in the morning. Then, a light lunch because normally I have to ride in the afternoon. At night, I normally eat meat – like a steak. On a perfect day, I don’t eat too much.
What’s your personal grooming routine?
I don’t have a grooming routine – I shower and go.
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
It’s great to eat healthy. I’m trying to stay away from gluten now as much as I can. For exercise, I do a lot of riding and I try to run and go to the gym two to three times a week.
One thing women don’t know about men that they should…
I think women know all there is to know about men and they use it to control us!
Do you and your wife cook together? What do you like to make?
We do. Normally we cook when we have guests over. We cook different things, but often Argentinian barbeque.
The most romantic thing you’ve ever done…
You’ll have to ask my wife!
What’s the best thing Ralph Lauren has said to you?
He has told me many things that I have been inspired by. He always talks about how his love for his family and privacy are the most important things in his life. This has stuck with me. He started his company with a dream and he did it because he loved the idea. He never did it for the money; he just pursued his dream.
Do you have any pre or post match routines? What are they?
Pre-match, I try to go to sleep the day before thinking about the game – and the things I have to accomplish in that game – so that it gets stuck in my mind. Post-match, it depends on whether we win or lose. Hopefully we win, and I spray Veuve Clicquot champagne!
What do you eat leading up to a big match?
Something light like pasta or something else rich in carbohydrates.
Three items every man should own…
Advice you’d give your younger self…
That’s a very good question. I had a child when I was very young so I had to figure things out very early in my life, which gave me a lot of focus. I like everything that happened to me and am okay with how my life turned out.
What’s your favorite Argentinian foods?
Argentinian Barbeque and Dulce de Leche.
In the same vein as ‘what is the new black’ in fashion, what’s the new potato in Polo?
It is and will always be going to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic.
