Debi Mazar Doesn’t Get Jokes

She cooks, she acts, and she makes us laugh; Debi Mazar was sort of perfect for this week’s Woman Crush Wednesday. We’ve loved her since she graced the screen in Goodfellas, so when she told a story about stooping it in Harlem with Martin Scorcese, it was hard to keep cool.

The actress hasn’t slowed down; she now has her own Cooking Channel show –Extra Virgin – as well a new show Younger which currently airs on on TV Land. A new potato head? We think so. We caught up with Mazar on all things food and comedy; turns our she loves a bloody steak, expression lines and Kenan Thompson…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

Wake up! Then I drink a big glass of water with fresh squeezed lemon. About fifteen minutes later, my husband brings me my first coffee (Lavazza) in bed, made with a moca pot, and a drop of hot, whole milk. I down about two and a half of those. A bit later, Daniel Boulud’s smoked salmon flavored with cilantro and tequila with crème fresh, red onion, on a thin toasted black bread and blood orange juice.

By about 1pm, I have a beautiful salad consisting of different lettuces: Arugula, micro-greens, avocado, red onion, cherry tomatoes, topped off with toasted sliced almonds, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper, and a good balsamic. Then my fresh lentil soup with a slice of my husband’s daily baked, fresh Tuscan bread, followed by a macchiato.

Around 7 pm, I have a glass of a good Brunello di Montalcino, Castelvetrano olives, and Sottocenere cheese while cooking. I’ll make “Arista,” (a lean pork loin) cooked in herbs and beer on the stovetop with roasted fingerling potatoes with rosemary and garlic, and sautéed broccoli rabe. Dessert will be our Schiacciata alla Fiorentina (a super light cake with orange zest) and an herbal tea before bed.

A beauty routine of yours that hasn’t changed since Goodfellas

I always take care of my skin and use greasy moisturizers in the evening. I use Dr. Hauschka’s daily moisturizer and rose crème.

Do you have a funny memory from that movie? What is it?

In between scenes, sitting on a stoop in Harlem with Martin Scorsese while he told me tidbits of his personal story for me to incorporate into my character.

Funny similarities between you and your character on Younger

Like my character Maggie, I’m a great friend; I’d give you the shirt off my back. I’m a good listener, I keep a nice home and I collect way too many things!

Oddest advice you’ve ever received…

I once went to a Russian card reader who seemed very serious. She took a huge pause and said, “Never leave the house without lipstick.” I’ve never been to a card reader since.

Advice you’d give to your younger self…

Save your money, tell people less of your business, and don’t smoke.

The most unattractive food you can’t get enough of…

This is a hard one, as I don’t really eat ‘unattractive’ food. That’s subjective really. I think a bloody steak is gorgeous and my food looks beautiful.

The joke people find funny that you’ve never gotten…

I don’t get jokes in general.

What’s one thing we don’t know about you? Why do you want us to know it now?

I’m extremely open and have shared a lot in my career. I also believe in mystery. Keep people guessing, so that’s all I’m giving you.

Did your mom cook? What were her go-to recipes and what was she like in the kitchen?

My mom had me at fifteen, so she actually wasn’t a great cook for a very long time. When she was twenty-two (and I was seven) I remember her making delicious tacos. From there on she got better and better. She became a farmer and started jarring sauces and fruit and cooking up a storm!

The crush you haven’t admitted to until now…

Kenan Thompson.

You never liked blank till your tried it at blank…

I’ve never liked tripe until I had it off of a street cart in Firenze.

What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?

NYC is one of my favorites as we are a melting pot! Some of my favorite restaurants are Bar Pitti, Il Posto Accanto, Fonda, Russ & Daughters, Osteria Morini and Prune. I also love Firenze for dining – Osteria dei Pazzi, Antica Locanda di Sesto, Cave di Miano, and Procacci.

Blank is ‘The New Potato because blank…

Expression lines are the new potato because they show happiness and curiosity. They show a map of your face and time earned. Without them, you look old and frozen.
