Rag & Bone’s Marcus & David

If you’re anything like us, the fashion brand Rag & Bone is one of the soundtracks to your life. It’s classic and yet has that New York edge so many of us can’t live without. We thought we’d catch up with the guys behind the brand – partners Marcus Wainwright and David Neville – on all things food and fashion. Turns out, you can never go wrong with the perfect leather jacket; you can go wrong with too much makeup and if you’re smiling, you’re good to go…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

David Neville: My wife’s scrambled eggs and pancakes for breakfast. Lunch would be soup from the Bedford Gourmet Deli and dinner my Mum’s roast chicken.

Marcus Wainwright: Poached eggs for breakfast at home, a burger for lunch out with my kids, and dinner at Sosaibo in Tokyo.

What’s one item every woman should own? Why?

D: A great collection of jeans.

M: The perfect leather jacket – I shouldn’t have to explain why!

What’s one item every man should own and why?

D: Reward yourself with a watch you love. It can help you remember what you have accomplished to get it.

What’s your advice to designers just starting out?

D: Keep on trucking and pay a lot of attention to the business; the customer tells you what they like!

M: Only design what you love, and make sure you sell enough to pay to design the next season!

Advice you’d give your younger self…

D: The same stuff I give myself today; don’t let the bastards get you down.

M: Invest in Apple stock.

The best advice you’ve ever received and from who…

D:  “Keep on smiling,” from my school housemaster.

M: “Wear whatever you feel good in, as long as it’s clean,” from my Mother.

Where do you think e-commerce is going? How will that affect brick and mortar shopping?

D: I think it will eventually go virtual. In our industry, I’m a believer in the need for both channels.

M: It’s going all the way to the end of civilization! Have you not seen The Terminator?!

Your favorite thing for a woman to wear and why…

D: A bikini, because it means I’m on the beach.

M: A smile – that’s all you need.

Advice to women getting up, looking in the mirror and getting dressed…

D:  Not too much makeup. Less is more.

M: Don’t think about it.

Who is the person that’s most inspired you throughout your career and why?

D: My parents; they gave me a lot of confidence.

M: My parents; they taught me everything I know.

If you could see one person in Rag & Bone that you haven’t seen in it yet, who would it be and why?

D: Kate Middleton.

M: President Obama.

Gifts for guys that girlfriends and husbands can never go wrong with…

D: Books.

M: Ferraris.

In the same vein as what is the new black, what’s the new potato right now? (‘the new thing’ in fashion

D: High-low dressing.

M: Not trying too hard is the new potato.
