Pitch Perfect 2’s Ester Dean

If you’re anything like us, after you saw the first Pitch Perfect movie you truly considered quitting your day job and looking for A Capella groups to join. When someone insulted you, you’d say something like “Aca-scuse me?” When you went to parties, you’d turn the designated playlist to the Pitch Perfect playlist on Spotify, even if the theme of the evening was Mad Men. When you went on a first date and the guy said he hadn’t seen the movie, you added a new deal breaker to your list (which your Mom’s already said is getting too long). And lastly, when you heard there was a sequel coming out, you did your own variation of either gangnam style or the harlem shake.

Barden Bella’s star Ester Dean – whose latest EP, Miss Ester Dean, just dropped in April – took time out of her schedule to chat about all things Pitch Perfect 2. The movie comes out tonight, but we found time to get Ester to fill us in on her favorite girl bands growing up, her ideal food day and her most magical co-writing experience. She also did a mash-up for us in eighteen seconds…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

A Starbucks double shot with hazelnut cream over ice for breakfast. For lunch, a sushi burrito from my favorite sushi place. For dinner, a medium Ribeye with a butter sour cream potato, and for a studio late-night sneak in, egg whites, hash browns, avocado and a chicken fajita scramble from IHOP.

Funniest thing that happened on the set of Pitch Perfect 2

The funniest thing is when Anna Kendrick mimics Brittany Snow. Anna and Brittany together are a riot!

Funniest thing Rebel Wilson has said to you…

All of Rebel’s jokes on the movie kept me laughing; she is really a joy to be around!

Did you have second thoughts about doing the sequel?

Absolutely not, I couldn’t wait to get started.

The best advice you’ve received from a big musician…

Rihanna always said that it’s for the fans and you’d be nowhere without them. That really stuck with me – how important all fans are.

What’s been your most memorable co-writing experience? Who was it with?

My most memorable experience was with Katy Perry co-writing “Firework” and the fact that something so moving and inspiring came out of it.

What was your favorite girl band growing up?

Sisters With Voices

What can’t you stop listening to right now?

“Crazy Youngster”

What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?

In Atlanta, Georgia, a Soul food restaurant called Annie Laura’s Kitchen. In California, The Boiling Crab, and in New York, Cafeteria and Pio Pio.

If you were ordering sushi, what would your order be? From where?

From Asuka: A Sushi Buritto and the Golden State Roll.

In the same vein as ‘what is the new black’ what’s ‘the new potato’ in music right now?

The new IT in music is the underdogs. People are now rooting for the independent underdogs.
