It’s turn-the-tables Tuesday…Okay, we know that’s not a thing, but we really did turn the tables on stylist Micaela Erlanger at the St. Regis this month. With celebrity clients like Lupita Nyong’o, Michelle Dockery and Mary J. Blige, we had big shoes to fill by dressing Erlanger, but we like to think we did a pretty sweet job.
Against the backdrop of the St. Regis ballroom, we bedecked the stylist in Oscar de la Renta – so really what could go wrong? We also chatted with Erlanger on her clients for the Academy Awards on Sunday (spoiler alert, they include Jared Leto), styling secrets and why truffle oil is essential. #TurnTheTablesTuesday? Yeah, it’s a thing now.
What is your ideal food day?
A homemade farmers market frittata to start my day with plenty of avocado, a soup from Spoon (this amazing little catering spot that is beneath my office) and really good sushi for dinner! I like to eat clean foods whenever possible. My guilty pleasure would probably be tacos.
What do the upcoming Oscars look like styling-wise? Who will you be working with?
I will be working with Lupita Nyong’o, Common, and Jared Leto.
Do you have a favorite person/outfit you’ve created for a certain night thus far in your career? Who/what was it?
Impossible to choose! Lupita in the red caped Ralph Lauren or blue pleated Prada gown were sensational moments. Also Michelle Dockery in Alexandre Vaulthier at the 2013 Golden Globes was my first major red carpet moment.
Anything you’re particularly excited about?
Advice to people trying to break into the industry…
Intern, intern, intern. It’s your only way to get your foot in the door.
Tips for people picking out pieces to get red carpet ready for the very first time…
Choose a feature and focal point to highlight – also make sure you are comfortable in whatever it is you wear!
What advice do you have for women getting up in the morning looking in the mirror and getting dressed?
Don’t forget your moisturizer.
Where do you love to travel? What won’t you travel without?
I love my cashmere Lisa Perry travel blanket and eye mask. It makes every plane ride that much more comfortable. You will find me going anywhere with a beach.
What must always be in the bag of a stylist…
Safety pins and pre-threaded needles! You just never know…
Words to BOTH dress and eat by…
Stand up straight and smile.
What ingredient makes everything better?
Truffle oil actually makes life better and literally can be eaten with anything.
What do you find to be the biggest fashion ‘don’t’?
I don’t think there are any don’ts. It’s more about how you turn everything into a do.
Similarities between food and fashion…
Delicious, decadent, dreamy, creative.
Do you snack while styling? What are your go-tos?
I need to have my hands free and clean when styling so I love smoothies, and keep almonds on hand for a quick energy boost.
Any tips on great foods to eat seventy-two hours before a big evening?
Avoid salt and sugar – they bloat you. Stick to clean eating: fish, brown rice, and leafy greens.
What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you love in each?
Paris without question. There is this amazing Moroccan restaurant called Le 404. I don’t know how to describe it other than kind of magical. Also David Toutain is unbelievable; I had a life changing meal there.
In the same vein as what is the new black, what’s the new potato right now?
Backpacks are back.
