Last night marked the season five premiere of Shameless, a Showtime show that’s no doubt garnered a dedicated following who love the uber-real characters and their antics. One of those characters – the beautiful Shanola Hampton (who plays V on the show) – caught up with us about her own vices, the new season, and her love of pilates and a heavily buttered grilled cheese (what a great combo?)…
From start to finish what would be your ideal food day?
I would start with crab cake benedict and cinnamon French toast. I’d skip lunch and have a huge Italian dinner of lasagna or seafood fettuccine alfredo and pizza. I’d then top of the day with a cupcake, cake, or bread pudding. Desserts are my addiction!
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
I practice beauty from the inside out by doing meditations. I’m not the best when it comes to diet, so I periodically do juice cleanses to clean out all the toxins.
What are your ideal workouts?
Pilates is one of my favorite workouts. I do cardio on the treadmill, elliptical, and bike. Low weights and high reps, along with a major ab work. Ideally, I’ll do eighteen minutes on a treadmill with five pound weights, then move to the elliptical for fifteen minutes, and finish with the bike.
What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened on the Shameless set?
One of the craziest things to happen on set was actually when we were on location in Chicago and we were caught in a major blizzard! It was like Armageddon! We shut down production and one of my cast mates snow surfed while holding onto the back of a truck! No board – just with his boats on.
Are you like your character, how so (or not so)?
Veronica and I are very different in our upbringing, but very alike in spirit. She’s loyal and loves fiercely, much like myself.
What can we expect from the upcoming season?
This season has a lot happening! The kids are all grown up, Fiona is out of jail, Frank has a new liver, and Kev and Veronica are parents! You will see Kev and V struggle in a way that you haven’t seen in past seasons; it’s going to be a ride!
What’s a childhood recipe you’ll never forget that you still make now?
Nothing fancy, just a grilled cheese with extra butter around the crust.
What’s on your playlist right now?
I really only listen to gospel.
Words to both act and eat by:
No one wants bland! Always add some seasoning!
Five things you’re coveting right now…
Cupcakes, sleep, a spa day, vacation, and cookies.
Advice to women getting up looking in the mirror every morning and getting dressed…
Give yourself a little nod of approval before you leave the house – and throw on some gloss.
As a new mom, advice for new moms…
I have no advice; I’m figuring it out as I go along. I will say sleep training was the best decision we’ve made so far.
Your favorite Chicago restaurants when you go there to shoot…
In what realm of your own life are you ‘shameless?’
I have very little filter, and I have very little shame. I’m pretty shameless.
If you could host a dinner party with any 5 people living or dead who would be there? What would you cook?
Oprah, my Mother, who is deceased, my Dad, Martin Luther King Jr., and Whitney Houston. I’d like to have my husband there too, but he would totally understand getting the boot for Whitney! I wouldn’t cook, it would be too much pressure! I would have a chef prepare surf and turf, and cake for dessert.
