Kelly Wearstler is as classic, chic and gorgeous as the home decor she peddles; she’s also as versatile as her interior design brand, which has recently expanded to fine jewelry. We visited Wearstler’s studio in Los Angeles, as well as her flagship store; both made us want to empty our wallets immediately. TNP chatted with Wearstler on all things food, fashion and the trinkets and tabletop decor in between…what better way to kick off fall than with an apartment overhaul? Yeah, that’s what we thought.
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
After my daily Barry’s Bootcamp class, I’d start with a juice – kale, spinach, apple, banana, celery, lemon, almonds, ice, a little water and a little protein powder. Then I’ll go to Urth Caffe for an organic dry double nonfat macchiato. Since this is my ideal day, there’d be no line, which never happens! I prefer to snack throughout the day rather than having just three square meals – my favorites are raw almonds, veggies and quinoa. I also have to have my daily juice from Erewhon, with beets, half an apple, kale, lemon, ginger and E3 live. It’s like a liquid farmers market – perfectly fresh. I’d have dinner with my family at Madeo in Los Angeles. It’s the best Italian in LA. And for dessert, I’d indulge in a Compartés chocolate bar!
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
I’m incredibly healthy and very selective about what I put in my body. I try to eat as much raw, local ingredients as possible and stick to a low-sugar, no-empty-calories diet. Also, giving love and being loved — it’s as important as what you eat.
What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?
In the morning I spray Dr. Hauschka Clarifying Intensive Treatment, then use Natura Bisse Diamond Extreme Eye followed by my Skinceuticals sunscreen. Protecting my skin is super important. I always wear sunscreen. I apply it with a BeautyBlender – only a black or a white one. I put on a little Edward Bess mascara and Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Petunia. I try to use as much toxin-free stuff as possible.
My evening routine is really simple. I wash and condition my hair every night with Oribe Signature Shampoo and Signature Conditioner. On the weekends, I do the Oribe Signature Moisture Masque. The packaging is amazing. It looks nice in the shower and smells so good. I let my hair air-dry while I sleep. I don’t use any hair tools – no blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron. I’ve always been easy when it comes to my hair. I wake up in the morning and do nothing to it. I don’t brush it or anything. I comb it in the shower with a wide-tooth comb every 10 days or so, but that’s it.
How do you always start your day on a good note?
I wake up my two little boys and husband with a kiss every morning and then I’m off to my Barry’s Bootcamp class.
What’s a beauty mainstay you haven’t changed since your teenage years?
I’ve always exercised because I grew up on a beach. You’re always in a bathing suit so you’re body-conscious. I’ve been going to Barry’s Bootcamp classes for thirteen years or so now. I go six days a week at 5 or 6:30 a.m. It’s so unnatural to sprint to loud rap music that early but I don’t feel like myself if I don’t go.
What foods do you find are best and worst for your skin?
I love raw nuts – especially almonds – and vegetables. I also sip on alkaline water with lemon and cayenne pepper throughout the day.
What’s always in your bag and why?
My camera, a sketchbook and a sharpened #2 pencil with an eraser. I’m so curious. I love to document everything that inspires me on the go.
Where do you love to travel? What won’t you travel without?
I really love traveling anywhere and everywhere. It’s all about educating my eye and experiencing new environments, cultures and architecture. I won’t travel without Frank, my grandmother’s teddy bear. He’s my good luck charm who gets me there and back safely.
What do you always put out at a dinner party?
All of my china that I’ve designed, of course!
What do you always bring when attending one as a guest?
