Relationships in the digital age…how much time do you have? Chances are, if you’re in the fashion industry, not much (happy NYFW everybody!). Regardless, our tour today through the world of online dating – with Catfish creator Nev Schulman – is worth a thorough read. You remember Catfish, the Sundance documentary that proved that documentaries can seriously keep you on the edge of your seat. The plot went a little like this: Boy meets girl online, boy goes to find girl after lots of digital chatter and love, boy is…well…surprised by his discovery (we won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it).
Not only was the movie made into an MTV spin-off series (currently in its fourth season), but Schulman came out with a book yesterday – In Real Life – that further explores love in the age of all things apps. We got Schulman’s crib notes on online relationships, favorite first date spots and the value in an old-fashioned love note…handwritten people, not e-messaged.
What has social media done to the dating world?
Social media has both helped and hurt the dating world. Of course, it’s easy to see how having access to more people with similar passions and interests as you is a great thing, and has led to many happy relationships. However, I feel that because there seems to be a limitless number of people to date, and we have been sold on the idea that everybody has a ‘soul mate,’ people seem to be a lot less willing to give somebody a chance if it’s not love at first sight.
Did your first notorious experience with online dating turn you off from it?
Not really, although I was never really online dating to begin with and haven’t since. I still support the process and encourage people to use online dating sites, as long as they are clear with what their intentions and expectations are.
Tips for people first doing online dating…
Your idea of the perfect first date…
“High Brow/Low Brow” – Start with something cultural and interesting like a gallery or performance. This will give you plenty to talk about over your “low brow” dinner at In-N-Out.
Tinder (and other fast swipe dating apps) came out after the Catfish movie. What did you think of them?
Like most social media, I think it’s a waste of time.
Favorite first date spots in NYC and LA…
If you go with the “High Brow/Low Brow” date in New York City, then a performance at New York City Center followed by a burger at Burger Joint is the way to go.
Can you be romantic online? How?
Sure, but nothing comes close to being romantic in real life. Write her a letter for God’s sake!
If you were to cook a girl an ideal dinner, what would you make?
Pizza. Any girl I date has to love pizza.
What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?
Tel Aviv. So fresh and so delicious. Start at Port Said and end at Port Said.
