Louise Roe

We officially want to be British today on TNP. Why? We sat down with the impossibly cool fashion journalist and TV host Louise Roe at La Conversation in LA to speak to a variety of topics from English breakfast tea, to Milagro tequila, to Clarins eye cream, all the way to high-fiving Gwyneth Paltrow at the Oscars (we call it conscious high-fiving). Peruse the interview with the TV host that’s stolen our hearts (let’s be real, that’s rare)…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

A breakfast burrito from La Conversation with a cup of English breakfast tea. Then a seafood salad for lunch, including lobster and scallops. A fresh juice mid-afternoon; I love lemon, ginger and a few greens. And then for dinner I’m going nuts – spicy margaritas, guacamole and plantain chips (Soho House does the best), then onto a red Thai curry with coconut rice. And for dessert, I still act like a kid at Disneyland, pumping my own frozen yogurt at Yogurt Stop and overdoing the toppings. After living in LA for five years, the novelty of that is nowhere near wearing off.

What’s your drink?

The Poor Carlito, served at Eveleigh. Milagro tequila, fresh lime, honey, smoked salt and a giant ice cube. It’s a party in a glass.

A beauty mainstay that hasn’t changed since your teenage years

Clarins eye cream. My mum also uses it and it reminds me of her.

Nightly and morning beauty routines…

In the morning, I exfoliate my face in the shower. DNA has a lemon-scented scrub that’s gentle but leaves my skin really soft. I use a Lancôme tinted moisturizer with SPF as it’s so sunny here, Benefit’s Erase Paste to hide eye circles, a little bronzer and Lucas Papaw lip balm, and I’m good to go. In the evening, I am militant about taking off every last scrap of makeup. I hate sleeping with any on; it feels yucky! I’ll do a sexy mud mask twice a week, usually just to scare anyone else in the house, and then apply a thick night cream, like Philosophy. I also go through an entire can of TRESemme Dry Shampoo almost every week. It’s the best for that second-day wavy hair.

Most memorable experience covering an awards show

Definitely the Oscars in 2012. I hosted ABC’s live show to 31 million people. Gwyneth [Paltrow] was my favorite; we high-fived and she’s just glowing in real life. Nick Nolte was a loveable nutter as expected. He told me the names of his pet crows.

Most memorable experience covering The Royal Wedding…

I was positioned in the media studios, right across from Buckingham Palace. We’d been there since 2am because they shut the roads so early. When I turned around and saw the first kiss, on the balcony, and then the fighter pilots flew overhead, it was surreal. I genuinely felt that goose-pimply feeling of, ‘this is a historical moment’.

Most common mistake when applying makeup…

I only learned this recently, but the subtle color differences to your concealer are really essential. Yellow-based versus pink-based makes a huge difference to how it blends on your face.

Foods that make you glow…

Avocado; I am obsessed! I eat at least one a day. I even carry one on planes – people look at me like I’m a lunatic. But it keeps my skin plumped and hydrated.

Words to eat by…

Drink tequila, because no great story ever started with a salad.
