By now it’s no secret that we like to play with our food; especially on a Friday. This week we hung out with designer Reece Solomon at her brother’s new restaurant, The Cleveland, amongst a bevy of delicious Reece Hudson bags. The line (named partly after Reece’s restaurateur brother Hudson) is a favorite of ours, and like so many accessories near and dear to our heart they happen to be the perfect size for packing snacks and storing beauty products (equally important capabilities of course). We chatted with Reece on all things food and fashion, which was the theme of the shoot per usual…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
For breakfast, coffee with almond milk, and poached eggs over smoked salmon. For lunch, one of my favorite lunches in the world, at Café Gitane – their hearts of palm salad with chicken and their avocado toast. As an afternoon snack, an apple with peanut butter or a green juice. And for dinner, probably sushi, otherwise grilled fish or steak with vegetables and a glass of red wine.
How do you always start your day on a good note?
With a very large cup of coffee, and if I’m lucky a yoga class.
What’s your drink?
Whiskey on the rocks, or an Old Fashioned.
What gets you inspired?
A little bit of everything. It’s hard not to be influenced by street style, especially lately, but travel is often one of the best starting points of inspiration because you’re physically taken out of your normal visual surroundings or culture, and freshness is always good. So much of inspiration and design is about the physical space in which you create. I also like more abstract references, such as imaginary lives of some persona I’ve created in my mind or that of a character in a movie I love.
Where are your favorite spots to travel to? What won’t your travel without?
I travel all the time to Florence for work, and Paris whenever possible. I also go to Los Angeles a lot as well – as an easy escape from New York winters – and to spend time with friends who live out there. I recently came back from Cabo, which I absolutely loved, and growing up I always vacationed with my family in Barbados so I have a special fondness for it.
Did you have any specific trips that certain designs were born out of? What were they?
My Spring/Summer 2014 collection was primarily influenced by a trip to Istanbul, most evident in the color palette of the collection I think. In my most recent collection for Fall/Winter 2014, I introduced a new family style called the Knox, and that was heavily inspired by a recent trip to London.
Beauty routines for both morning and night…
I like Fresh soy facial cleanser in the morning and at night, followed by some type of face serum (I switch often) and eye cream (either Fresh black tea or Kate Somerville). In the morning I use Kate Somerville CC cream with SPF, and at night Kate Somerville oil-free moisturizer. During the winter I often use a facial oil at night instead of moisturizer, or if my skin is especially dry then I sleep with pure coconut oil on my face about once a week. Coconut oil is also great as an eye make-up remover.
Go-to afternoon snack at the studio…
Fruit, more coffee, and sometimes frozen yogurt.
Three snacks perfect for the Phoenix bag…
A granola bar, a bag of trail mix, and a string cheese.
Go-to lunch at the studio…
Salads, sushi, or Soba noodle soup.
What’s always in your fridge?
Almond milk, eggs, yogurt, and fruit.
How do you balance health and eating out?
I try to eat as healthy as possible during the day because I have more control over what I’m consuming, how it’s made, etc. I especially keep that in mind if I know I’m eating out for dinner, where you don’t always know how things exactly are prepared and you usually eat more than you would at home. But if I’m eating a more rich dinner, then I try to skip dessert and limit how much bread I eat, though that’s difficult.
What old Hollywood star wore handbags best?
If you could choose one person to wear one of your bags that hasn’t, who would it be? What would they wear?
Michelle Obama, and I’d love to see her wear a new Stendhal Minaudiere from our Fall collection.
What are your favorite cities for food? Where do you go to in each?
New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. In New York, my favorite restaurants are The Cleveland, Café Gitane, The Smile, Bacaro, Sushi of Gari, Bar Pitti, Black Market, and Pylos. In Los Angeles, I love Sushi Park, Madeo, Gjelina, Cora’s, Salt’s Cure, Son Of A Gun, Pace, and In-n-Out Burger. In Paris my favorite places are Chez Andre, L’Avenue, Le Castiglione, Hotel Costes, Kunitoraya, Guy Savoy, Cafe Ferdi, Spring, and Robert et Louise.
In the same vein as ‘what is the new black,’ what is the new potato of handbags?
The oversized clutch.
