Christos Garkinos

Christos Garkinos is known as ‘the Robin Hood of fashion,’ discovering incredible fashion pieces around the world and making them available at his vintage couture mecca – Decades. His new HSN women’s line, Eureka, celebrates just that, as the name signifies the moment that Garkinos happens upon a treasure.

Decades is a favorite vintage destination of ours, so we couldn’t help but hang with Garkinos while he was here in NYC. What’s a better way to get over hump day than with some amazing vintage?

On your personal style…

I love pairing high and low and I find it far more creative and fulfilling to pull a look together using pieces from totally different eras, seasons and styles. Wearing Chanel with Zara brings me joy!

On your new HSN line…

This collection is the culmination of a twenty-year dream. I’ve been obsessed with the network since I was young. In fact, my first credit card purchase was for a set of pillows from HSN when I was fifteen! Eureka is my love letter to all the ‘real size’ Greek women with whom I grew up.

On how your new line is inspired by your work with vintage…

There are definite vintage influences in the collection. The Aspasia swing jacket is reminiscent of a piece from my mom’s closet from the sixties (and I named it after her). The matte sequin skirt is a total eighties throwback but with a much more modern silhouette.

On your most memorable ‘eureka’ moment ever…

Finding a cache of Tom Ford for Gucci. To me, he is the ultimate fashion icon and his pieces are just beyond. Of course the fact that this was a limited edition collection makes it that much more valuable, but to me it was also about the experience.

On your most prized possession…

Hands down, this has to be my vintage cuff link collection from my father. My dad was an incredible influence on me. He had amazing style and took such pride in his clothes. That is something I carry with me always.

On recipes your Mom used to make…

In addition to a whole slew of Greek delicacies, Aspacia makes a mean lasagna. She combines the freshest possible ingredients and transports me to the Mediterranean every time. Great, now I’m hungry.

On ‘vintage’ dishes…

She’s a great cook, but my mom also used to make an equally bad Tuna Helper. Bleh!

On knowing how to find good vintage (whether in food, or fashion)…

My advice would be to keep your ear to the ground and keep in constant contact with your favorite sales people at the best stores. If you are kind and loyal to them, they will be good to you and let you in on a major delivery before it gets put out on the floor. And social media can be a great resource. Keep the conversation going and get the secret places from your pals.

On your style icons…

Tom Ford of course. My father. Steve McQueen.

On your most memorable dinner ever…

Forty of my friends and family in Mykonos for my fortieth birthday. Um, I don’t remember much. A lot of ouzo was involved!
