The Perfect Oatmeal

The Essentials

There’s a new column in New Potato land, and that column is called “The Essentials.” We’re going back to basics and going through them step by step, for those potato heads that are interested. (For those not, check out Chelsea Leyland boxing).

Now, have we ever tried to act like we’re professional chefs or maestros in the kitchen? No; we leave that to our tastemakers. What we can do though are the basics, ones we all know and love (and we think we do them pretty well). After all, potatoes never get old right? Nor does – say – oatmeal. It’s essential. Here are simple steps to the perfect bowl…

1. Stir 1 cup of raw oats into 1 3/4 cup of boiling water.

2. Let simmer for 1 minute, until water has absorbed. Cover and set aside for a few minutes.

3. Cut up bananas, blueberries, and any other fruit you desire. You can also add nuts or chia seeds for a little crunch.

4. Add a splash of your favorite natural sweetener. We like honey, but maple syrup is delicious as well.

5. Enjoy!

This is how I always made oatmeal but then found it is so much better when made with 1/2 almond milk and 1/2 water.

I do 1/2 cup oats with 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup almond milk, stovetop. Topped with a bit more almond milk and fruit. It’s more filling and doesn’t need sweetener!
