And so continues our Scandal premiere week…you didn’t think we’d have just one gladiator did you? Next up is Darby Stanchfield, who plays Abby Whelan, the sassy redhead who’s an ex-baker and present day Olivia Pope gladiator (again we apologize to those who may not watch the show, you’re just going to need to wiki the lingo this week).
Stanchfield is not just a gatekeeper at Olivia Pope & Associates, she’s also an absolute stunner – as is her home in the California hills. Not many mags can boast shooting her in her garden alongside her orange tree, but they’ve also been saved some serious real estate envy. Truly…we went back to our Manhattan apartments, tails between our legs. But prior to that, we had such a fun time with Stanchfield at her California retreat. Turns out, her words on food are as interesting as her onscreen performance. We’re thinking of having her do our next restaurant underground investigation; all we need is some sort of kitchen scandal, photos, some double-sided tape, and some really cool floor-to-ceiling windows…
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
I love simple food and I love to cook. Breakfast would be steel-cut oats with blueberries, walnuts, and plain soymilk. Lunch would be a salad with ingredients from my garden, supplemented with whatever is seasonal, be it kumquats, figs, raspberries, etc. Dinner is herbed, breaded Alaskan halibut sautéed in olive oil and asparagus bisque. And dark chocolate for dessert.
What’s your drink?
I am loving fresh pressed juices with organic fruits and vegetables. The greener the juice, the better.
What would your last meal be? Who would it be with?
My dad’s pancakes with my family.
How do you start your day on a good note?
Good coffee and organizing thoughts and things as I putter around the house.
What are your favorite places to travel to?
Yosemite National Park and Rome, Italy
What won’t you travel without?
A journal and a good pen. I am a big journal writer.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Nature. Also, people who are really true to themselves and don’t apologize for who they are.
What are some of your healthy routines?
Good skin care, drinking lots of water, eating fruits and vegetables, sleep and laughter. I love to watch a completely absurd movie at the end of a long week to laugh it all off.
What ingredient do you consider overrated?
Raw red onion. Enough said.
What ingredient are you convinced makes everything better?
Sea salt and lemons
Your go-to on set snack…
