Linda Rodin is the epitome of her skin care line – Rodin Olio Lusso – because, like her products, she exudes effortlessness. There’s really no other way to describe this fashion icon, who has most recently moved into the beauty world with face oils we are all addicted to. If you haven’t experienced this line yet, just think of the perfect Italian olive oil that teases the tongue with freshness and earthiness; now think of that feeling on your skin.
Rodin wears chic like a glove; somehow her style is both classic and quirky, a beautiful combination. Perusing her Chelsea apartment, it was hard for us to decide where and what to shoot, as every corner and crevice has something different to offer, much like Linda Rodin’s history. Starting as a model in the 60′s, she moved to New York in the 70′s and ran her own boutique (one of the First concept stores in New York). After moving on to be fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar, Rodin then became an independent stylist, dressing the likes of Madonna, Gisele Bundchen, Adriana Lima and Halle Berry.
Not only does Linda Rodin exemplify aging elegance and an old New York sensibility, but she also collects funny looking candy, which she stores in her refrigerator, along with crisp Sauvignon Blanc. We’re The New Potato and we just found our soulmate.
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
That’s a good question. I would probably get on a plane, go to Rome and have the best cappuccino in history – and an Italian brioche. They kind of look like a stovepipe – inside they’re hollow. And then I would – at about noon – go have a Prosecco, in a coffee bar, just standing up. Then I would go to a lunch outside in the center of Rome somewhere and have anything Italian that was good and something I couldn’t have here [in the US]. And then I would do the same at dinner: Fresh mozzarella, basil, tomatoes, great olive oil, bread and wine.
Everyone wants to know: What’s your trick to aging so beautifully?
Sleep! That’s what I always say – the same thing. I sleep a lot and I take good care of myself. I eat very well; I’m a healthy eater. I’m not an exercise person so I don’t have any regime for that. I think I just sleep well and eat well. I really think that’s the key – for me, anyway.
What are some of your favorite foods? What’s your diet if you could sum it up?
I eat the same thing every day. I eat organic romaine lettuce, mixed with organic avocados and organic hard-boiled egg. I have some kind of organic fish or salmon. It doesn’t have to be organic; I’m not a nut about it but I do the best I can. I have really good Italian olive oil, coarse salt and sometimes I’ll have bread and cheese. And I always have two glasses of crisp white wine.
If you do go out to restaurants, how do you order? What first catches your eye on a menu?
I like to go out to places that have food that I wouldn’t make at home. So I have Japanese food a lot; I probably wouldn’t make sushi. Although I’ve tried. I had a Japanese boyfriend, and he taught me the thing with the rice and it was a riot. So, it would be Japanese food or I love to go to Il Buco Alimentari; I love all that stuff. I don’t really love cooked food. I wouldn’t go to a restaurant and order a chicken breast. I’d rather have an order of broccoli, an order of kale and a big salad. I’d just rather eat little appetizers and green. I’m not a vegan or anything; I’m not some nut. But on a menu, I will always go to the salads and not the entrees.
In addition to your own line, what are the skin care products that you can’t live without?
Shimmer lights, for my hair. It’s Clairol and it makes grey hair really shiny and silvery. It really takes the dullness out of hair; that’s my biggest indulgence that’s not from my line. I really use only my own stuff aside from that. I always use Aquaphor. I don’t make make-up, so I use NARS and Make Up Forever lipstick. I use Maybelline mascara. I’ve been using that since I was fourteen – same hot pink and green package. It literally hasn’t changed since I was fourteen. I don’t wear eye make-up and I don’t wear make-up.
How did your brand, Rodin, come about?
Well, this is the most boring story, but I couldn’t find anything that I really liked out there. I work in the fashion business and I work with stylists – and I am a stylist - make-up artists, make-up, models, the best hair people, and I never found something that I really loved. So I decided to make it myself. I just put all the oils together that I like and I mixed it in a cup and here we are.
Do you have a nightly routine?
I cleanse my face with my soon to be out cleansing powder. You can kind of control the exfoliation with it depending on how much water you use. You just add warm water. It’s not a make-up remover; it’s not a rigorous thing for that. It’s just to really clean your face at the end of the day. I guess if you wear tons of make-up you have to use a different thing around your eyes and all that. When I take off my mascara, if I wear it, I just use a washcloth with hot water. And then I pat dry my face, and then I add my oil. That’s my nightly routine. Then in the morning I just put warm water on my face and I put the oil on again. Simple, simple, simple.
How do you always start your day?
Cappuccino. And a dog walk – he’s first. We walk to the corner where there is this little crêpe place that a lovely Russian guy owns and he makes these delicious crêpe. I never have a crêpe but I stand there and get my coffee and watch everybody else eating these yummy things, but I can’t really eat that in the morning. I get a cappuccino there every day. It’s Illy coffee; it’s just the best. And then we walk! That’s our routine every single day.
Where do you love to travel to and what won’t you travel without?
I love to travel to see my best friend who lives in France, although I really hate to travel. Now I do – now that I have the dog. I used to travel all over. The reason I loved to travel is because I collect shells, so I would go almost anywhere to collect shells. And I won’t travel without my oil and earplugs.
