Dinner with the Chernows

Have you ever wanted to be a fly on the wall in the homes of certain tastemakers? It’s those couples and families whose dinners you’re dying to crash – in a way that you can still watch it happen ‘naturally’ even though you’re there. That’s why we’ve decided to premiere a new column, which this week is titled “Dinner with the Chernows.” Pretty self explanatory right? We’ll be crashing the dinners of food couples we love, and first up is restaurateur Michael Chernow (of The Meatball Shop) and his gorgeous wife, pastry chef, model and yoga instructor, Donna Chernow.

The first thing to break to you is that the Brooklyn apartment these three (can’t forget their lovable dog Riley) inhabit is just as covetable and envy-worthy as Michael and Donna themselves. A slice of heaven in Williamsburg, it’s bedecked in vintage and antiques to die for with a spiral staircase that leads up to a gorgeous private rooftop. The space would leave even the most stubborn, dedicated manhattanhite speechless…yeah, we’re admitting it.

With a fresh herb garden up top and a kitchen stocked with ingredients for the night, the space set the stage for the perfect dinner for TNP to drop in on. The menu? Red Snapper with Fresh Herbs and Lemon, Sweet Potatoes with Rosemary, Thyme and Mint, Kale Salad with Quinoa, Strawberries, Avocado and Walnuts and Donna’s homemade Whole Wheat Bread with Currants and Pumpkin Seeds. We’re living the homemade high-life here.

With Donna chopping fresh herbs and vegetables downstairs and Michael grilling snapper up top, the nighttime vibe at this couple’s home was almost unbearably perfect. What’s more disturbing? We’re pretty convinced it’s the exact same scene on a night when a magazine ISN’T coming in to photograph.

We set the table for dinner on the roof, just in time to watch the sunset and have a quick cheers from Michael and Donna before the rain came down. Hurrying the dishes downstairs, it was the perfect multi-setting dinner (drinks and a sunset up top, dinner inside where Riley could sleep comfortably on his pillow). We discovered each dish was more delicious than the next, as the Chernows let us pillage as much of the meal as we liked. We’re pretty sure we ate more than they did…

While some families have nightcaps or post-dinner scrabble, this couple does it up with Tasti D-Light in their PJs in front of the television (Yes, they changed into their PJs for us). As they curled up on the couch for some fro-yo and Family Guy, we – quite frankly – refused to leave. Of course, the PJ photos are somehow as picture perfect as the rest of the shoot. Need we say more about dinner with this family? Eye candy is the theme for this one boys and girls…
