Denise Porcaro

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, men all have one thing in mind – flowers. When should they get them? Where can they get them? And no, the answer is not the day before at the Food Emporium down the street. The answer instead would be from the ultimate flower girl, Denise Porcaro, who recently expanded her shop (appropriately called Flower Girl) into a gem of a boutique on the Lower East Side. Porcaro produces beautiful arrangements with an edge – somewhat like Porcaro herself, whose look is as appealing as the flowers she sells. This is definitely our top pick for a Valentine’s Day arrangement, so we sat down with Porcaro for her take on everything new and everything floral…

Your new favorite spot…

Flower Girl’s new home on Eldridge Street.

The restaurants with the best flowers…

Gramercy Tavern

What’s the drink you just discovered?

Ginger Soother. I really gravitate towards anything with ginger in it, whether it be a smoothie, a juice, tea or a mixologist’s cocktail creation.

What’s the restaurant you just discovered?

My friend just opened Butcher’s Daughter. There are so many healthy things to eat. It also doesnt hurt that it’s on a great corner and so pretty inside; I like pretty things.

What’s your new favorite brunch spot?

Buvette. Not necessariy new on the map, but new to me and super delicious.

The restaurants you go to for the atmosphere…

Depends…For a fancy dinner, The Waverly Inn. If I’m in the mood for comfort – and want to feel like my Italian grandmother is in the kitchen – then The Meatball Shop. If I want to discover something new, Chinatown. I feel like a tourist in my own city on some of those streets under the Manhattan Bridge overpass. There are some yummy places there for a bit of an adventure. That’s one of the beauties of food in New York. You really have all/any options to eat at any budget and any cuisine, to harbor any mood.

Your go-to recipe for eating in…

Either a quiche – it is so easy and makes you look like a rockstar chef – or really anything that I can make in my Le Creuset, which is also super easy. That pot is magic.

The perfect flower arrangement to bring to a dinner party…

A hand-tied bouquet is really special. You can personalize the size and style to the host/home. It is so classic and simple. This also allows the host to either put the flowers in one vase, or play around and separate the flowers for around their home for the rest of the week after the diner party is over.
